Why urban solar mapping is the future: PV-Magazine

A LiDAR image of Halifax used for solar mapping from Green Power LabsBY: ALEXANDRE PAVLOVSKI AND VLADIMIR KOSTYLEV, The time is coming when the absence of solar panels on building roofs or façades will be obsolete, according to Green Power Labs president and CEO, Alexandre Pavlovski, and vice president of R&D, Vladimir Kostylev. Below they discuss the advantages of urban solar mapping and why it will play a big role in solar's future. Why urban solar mapping?
As urban buildings and houses often represent over one-third of national energy consumption, a major way forward in sustainable energy management for the built environment is through distributed, or on-site energy generation. Solar technology is a natural choice for on-site generation as we capture this free energy on the roofs and walls of our buildings. To deploy solar technologies, detailed solar suitability information on every building in a community should be included in urban planning tools and be part of a public outreach venue to attract the attention of the general public, and facilitate the work of the solar industry. The most efficient tool to address community energy objectives are interactive web-based urban solar maps.
Building on the advances of GIS and visualization technologies, a solid knowledge base on available solar resources and best practices in solar energy technologies, these maps offer a comprehensive planning tool to municipalities, and provide a unique guide to the solar industry and the general public. Urban solar maps also provide a venue for demonstrating the feasibility of solar energy projects in communities and monitoring the success of clean energy deployment and carbon management efforts.
