Through a chance seedling found from a box of discarded Braeburn and Fuji apples, Fern Ridge Produce Ltd has been developing a new variety which mixes the flavor of the Fuji and shape of the Braeburn. The new variety which they are calling Koru, has been in development with a limited number of containers reaching Asia and the United States.“Last year, we exported two containers,” says Hamish Davis, Managing Director of Fern Ridge Produce, “mostly to Taiwan but also to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Russia and the United States.” However, with the positive feedback which they've received, Fern Ridge anticipates shipping even more of the apples next year.“They're very grower-friendly,” Davis says of the apples, “they are high-yielding and have a very good size, so we know growers will want to plant them.” He anticipates that next year, Fern Ridge will ship about eight containers.
