Pakistan likely to import vegetables from India - Fresh Plaza

Pakistan is likely to import vegetables from India due to shortage caused by rains and floods in Sindh, a market representative said on Saturday. “Pakistan is likely to import vegetables from India in October, like last year when floods had destroyed vast swathes of farmlands,” Haji Shah Jehan, President, Welfare Association of Wholesale Vegetable Market Karachi, told The News. Supplies have dropped by 75 percent and prices have shot up by nearly 100 percent in the wholesale market of fruits and vegetables due to continuous downpour, he said. “The natural calamity has destroyed the agricultural supply chain,” Shah Jehan said. Normally 800 to 1,000 trucks of fruit and vegetable arrive at the market, but after rain supply has dropped to 200 to 250 trucks daily showing a decline of around 75 percent. Situation would be clearer in a week or two when flood ebbs in the vegetable growing districts of Sindh, he said. Read Full: Pakistan likely to import vegetables from India
