A week before the devastating earthquake that rocked Sikkim on the fateful September 18 evening, Travel Agent’s Association of Sikkim (TAAS) had announced plans to aggressively promote Sikkim Tourism at the national as well as international level from 2012. Rightly so, since Sikkim has been one of the top tourist destinations in India for tourists from rest of the country and abroad. 2010 actually proved to be a watershed for the beautiful Himalayan state when the number of foreign and domestic tourist visiting the state shot up beyond 200,00 and 700,000 respectively. This year, till the month of July 2011, a total of 368965 domestic tourist had already visited the state. In March this year Sikkim, along with Madhya Pradesh, was adjudged the best state in terms of tourist-related infrastructure and for running successful tourism campaigns. Sikkim got the National Tourism Awards for this unique distinction and became the best tourism state in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir region.
