
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. economy added 103,000 jobs in September, according to data released today by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. The gain included about 45,000 striking telecommunications workers who returned to their jobs. However, employers did not add enough new jobs to reduce the nation’s unemployment rate, which remained at 9.1 percent. Fourteen million people are counted among the unemployed; 6.2 million have been out of work for 27 weeks or more. The unemployment rates for teenagers (24.6 percent), blacks (16.0 percent), and Hispanics (11.3 percent) remain higher than the national average.
