The rarest and most mysterious cat in the world – the snow leopard – is on the brink of extinction. It has not been practically studied owing to the inaccessibility of its habitation sites, small population and clandestine life style. The northernmost group of snow leopards lives in southern Siberia and a Centre for Restoration of the Snow Leopard Population will be set up there, one similar to the leopard breeding nursery in Sochi. The snow leopards live in 13 countries – Russia, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The exact number of these animals is unknown, but experts believe it varies between 3,500 and 6,000, says a fellow at the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve in southern Siberia, Sergei Istomov.
