China, By Pierre Chen, The Ministry of Education announced Monday that college degrees which are not competitive in the marketplace will be axed, as more college graduates struggle to find jobs, Xinhua reported. Under the new measures published on the ministry’s website, degrees with an employment rate of below 60 percent for two consecutive years will have their enrollment quotas reduced, leading to their gradual phasing out. According to statistics released by the ministry on Monday, the
number of college students who will graduate and enter the country's job market in 2012 will reach 6.8 million. The ministry has ordered education authorities at all levels to introduce measures which can help graduates find jobs. The measures include offering tuition-waivers or loan repayments for graduates who work in remote areas, encouraging small businesses to employ college graduates and asking universities and research institutes to employ fresh graduates to take part in research projects.
