Jadeja hits the jackpot

The New Indian Express, By SS Shreekumar, Express News Service: BANGALORE: Chennai Super Kings bagged all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in a tie-breaker tussle with Deccan Chargers as the two bids were locked at $2 million, the highest for any player at the IPL V auctions at ITC Gardenia on Saturday. Both the franchises were asked to bid a secret amount in the tie-breaker. They were permitted to have a look at the bids and Chennai bagged the 23-year-old Saurashtra player. Jadeja will get a sum of USD 950,000 as per the contract he had signed with the now-disbanded Kochi Tuskers Kerala last year and even the secret amount that was bid on him by Chennai would go into the BCCI coffers. Each team had a maximum cap of USD 2 million and Chennai were left with no money for any other purchases. A total of 25 of 146 players were bid for in the four-hour long auction with the eight teams spending a totalof about $11 million in all. “Around 11 million was spent by franchisees during the auction. It was fair and transparent. I don’t think any of the franchisees have complained. The trading window will reopen on Monday,” said IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla.
