Russia to add to wonders of the world list

By: Natalya Kovalenko, The people in Russia have come up with the initiative to add Lake Baikal, Petergoff, the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed in Moscow, the Valley of Geysers in Kamchatka, the Moscow Kremlin, and also the Hermitage Museum and St. Issaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg to Wonders of the World List. Such are the results of the poll that was conducted by the online portal Hotels.com. Researchers asked the people
in Russia and also residents of another 23 countries in Europe, Asia, and America to say what cultural sights could present a great interest for tourists. According to this poll, the most famous site of all is the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. More than 70 per cent of respondents are well aware of this wonder. Following it are the Colloseum in Rome and the Great Wall of China – every third respondent mentioned them. However, the majority of respondents couldn’t say exactly where all these cultural monuments are situated. And as regards the other cultural monuments, the situation is even worse. For example, about 5 per cent of respondents in France, South Korea, and the Netherlands said that they had visited the Hanging Gardens of Babylon whose existence scientists call into question even today.
