Over 200,000 parade on St. Patrick Day in New York

More than 200,000 people took part  in  the  St. Patrick  Day  parade  in  New

York on Saturday. The parade-goers wearing green top hats and green vests adorned with bunches of shamrock marched 2.5 km along the Fifth Avenue to the sounds of the drums. Some 3 million people came to watch the parade. Traditionally, the marchers also included firefighters and policemen. The Irish have deep reverence for St. Patrick who brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century A.D. About 12% of Americans consider themselves to be the descendants of Irish settlers.
