By Jaywant Naidu: Miguel Nosibor, a French dancer who is one of the pioneers of the hip-hop dance movement, presented ‘Temps D’Arret organised by Alliance Francaise at Taramati Baradari. Born in Marseille in 1967, Miguel Nosibor belongs to the first generation of dancers and choreographers from the hip-hop movement. Since then, the hip -hop movement has changed considerably at the risk of losing its special place as an artistic movement that emerged from the working classes. Miguel, one of those who were influenced by the philosophical message of Afrika Bambaataa (founder of Zulu nation), uses body language to examine his memory and identity in the dance cum visual presentation made on this occasion. The agile body of Miguel and his swift movements, including the very delicate movements of his chest, were the hallmark of this unique creative effort. One could see the fusion of various styles of dances, including variations of taekwondo from martial arts. ‘Temps d'Arret’ means ‘A Pause ’. Miguel showed the need for him to take a break from the rigours of daily life. In fact Miguel had taken an actual break from dance in the year 2008. There was a video film being screened on one side that had people moving on the streets. On one side of the stage was an ‘Enlightened Globe’. Time and again Miguel feels the need to be drawn towards this ‘Globe’. But then as he comes close to it and is about to touch it, the memories and the identity haunt him and he is involuntarily drawn away from it. The struggle of the memories, the identity and the pause in his dance life are juxtaposed in all the rhythmic body movements that Miguel has to offer. There is a constant dilemma about the ‘yes’ and the ‘no’, whenever he approaches the ‘Globe’. It was truly a wonderful performance and received a standing ovation from the audience.
