New anti-obesity drug gets FDA approval

By Sarah Neary, The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the distribution of weight management, or anti-obesity pill Belviq (lorcaserin hydrochloride). It is the result of a joint venture by Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai. Belviq allegedly helps grown men and women curb their urge to overeat by turning on select serotonin 2C receptors in the brain, which may possibly make them feel full and thus eat less. The FDA stated in its news release that this can happen after having just a small portion of food.To qualify for a prescription, a person must have body mass index (BMI) of 27 – which is considered overweight – or higher. A BMI of 30 is considered obese. In addition, a patient needs to have a preexisting condition which has been brought on by weight gain. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are just two examples.
