Who were the real courtesans at the heart of Netflix’s Heeramandi?

 Netflix

Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his big-budget Bollywood production, featuring grand sets, star casts, meticulously choreographed dance sequences and lavish costumes, jewellery and furnishings. His new series for Netflix, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, lives up to these expectations.

Against this visually rich backdrop emerge the scheming, menacing and murderous courtesans of Heeramandi.

The series is set in Heeramandi, a historical red-light district of Lahore in present-day Pakistan. It unfolds against the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle against British rule.

The show is an entanglement of plot lines – a murder investigation, a war of succession, a budding love story and a courtesan’s secret involvement in a rebellion against British rule.

Eventually, all characters and storylines converge around the central theme of anti-colonial nationalism. Driven by nationalist fervour, the courtesans call themselves “patriots” and willingly sacrifice their careers and lives for the country.

But who were the real courtesans?

Role models for female independence

The show takes creative liberties by distorting the lives and timelines of the historical courtesans.

The North Indian tawa’ifs (courtesans), or nautch-girls (dancing girls, as the British called them), were cultural idols, female intellectuals and entrepreneurs.

Dating back to ancient India, these women were trained in music, dance, fashion, poetry, repartee, etiquette, languages and literature from a young age. Typically following a system of matrilineal inheritance, courtesans passed down their professional knowledge and skills to talented daughters of the household.

Once trained, courtesans attracted patronage from royal courts, feudal aristocrats and colonial officers.

This unique class enjoyed privileges not afforded to most women in Indian society, such as education and personal income. They led glamorous lifestyles, wielded power and wealth, and paid taxes.

As independent professionals, they contributed to Indian arts and culture, travelled extensively, made connections with chosen kin and often embraced gender fluidity.

Their financial, political and sexual independence challenged patriarchal gender norms and restrictive Hindu moral laws that dictated the lives of women from upper-middle-class families.

Complicated relationships

In Heeramandi, the courtesans turn patriotic to avenge the British police officers for raping and killing the natives. While these actions are dramatic, the historical relationship between courtesans, the British empire and Indian nationalism was more complex.

The politically engaged Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari) mirrors Azizan Bai, a courtesan from Kanpur who is said to have financially supported the 1857 mutiny against the British East India Company.

While the mutiny was one of the most widespread anti-colonial revolts of the 19th century, Indian nationalism was not its primary aim, but a consequence. Azizan’s interest was in maintaining her patronage from the native rulers for her social and economic wellbeing.

After 1857, India’s governance shifted from the East India Company to the Crown, leading to the spread of British rule across India alongside Western education and Victorian morality. Meanwhile, nationalist leaders envisioned a nation as a pure land of sacred Hindu ancestors and valued chastity in women.

Both the imperial and nationalist ideals clashed with the courtesans’ sexual freedom.

In the 1890s, Hindu reformers and bourgeois nationalists joined Christian missionaries in organising anti-nautch campaigns that advocated boycotting them to “rescue” art and culture from perceived immorality. This led to the downfall of the courtesan class.

In Heeramandi, patronage diminishes and the women’s dreams of marriage fade. The courtesans shut down their salons, give up their careers and sacrifice their lives for the nation.

But historical courtesans were quick to reinvent themselves in the face of declining patronage and social stigma.

They turned to the power of modern technology. Gauhar Jaan, a famous courtesan, became a celebrated concert singer and gramophone artist, earning the title of “India’s Melba” in the international press.

In 1921, Gandhi asked Gauhar Jaan to perform for the Swaraj Fund. Aware of the ambiguous position courtesans held in nationalist discourse, she agreed on the condition that Gandhi attend her performance. When Gandhi failed to show up, she contributed only half of the raised amount to the cause.

Courtesans contributed significantly to the founding of the Indian film industry through their artistry, star power and capital investment. The first generation of female film stars came from courtesan backgrounds: Jaddan Bai, Kajjan Bai, Akhtaribai Faizabadi and Naseem Banu entered the industry as actors, singers, composers, directors and studio owners.

Later, some acted as managers and costume designers for their daughters, the emerging actors of the next generation.

By becoming modern-day artists, the courtesans preserved their art. They remained visible and relevant in a society that was increasingly obliterating women’s cultural contributions and diminishing their role as citizens in an emerging nation.

Patriarchal nationalism

In the show, a woman’s value is judged by her respectability, marital status and the presence of a male guardian controlling her sexuality. Courtesans refer to themselves as “birds in gilded cages” and dream of freedom from their courtesan lifestyle.

Heeramandi oversimplifies the multilayered persona of tawa’ifs. Netflix

Here, the courtesans’ nationalism resonates with present-day far-right Hindu nationalists, seemingly promising women empowerment in nationalism but, in reality, reserving only regressive roles for women.

Heeramandi oversimplifies the multilayered persona of tawa’ifs. The series portrays them as melancholic victims yearning for patriarchal married bliss, while remaining marginalised in respectable society. But these women should be remembered as celebrated figures filled with joie-de-vivre, gusto and spiritedness.

They should be honoured for their strategies of self-representation and processes of self-determination, as they turned resilience into a way of life. The Conversation

Whyfor he’s back?

"Doctor, I cut the umbilical cord with a Swiss knife. Hope that’s okay?” This is what Shruti (Shruti Haasan), the annoying do-gooder, says to a doctor after she has extorted a baby from a screeching pregger in the back seat of Gabbar’s car. We neither see the doctor’s bewildered expression, nor do we hear the expletive the doctor may have mumbled. But this is a statement of much import. For this is exactly what director Krish should have said to A.R. Murugadoss from whose story and Tamil film (Ramanaa, 2002) Gabbar Is Back is derived. Except that Krish and his star Akshay Kumar haven't cut the umbilical neatly, but have smashed it to smithereens with stardom ka danda, wrenching it from all things that madeRamanaa a half-way decent film. For example, that one had a real-world setting where real-ish people operated; this one has stuttering links to reality solely for the purpose of manipulating our emotions in the crassest way possible. That one had music by Ilayaraja; this one has noise generated by Yo Yo Honey Singh, among others. Much like the 10 tehsildar who are kidnapped in the first few seconds of the film and dumped in a secret location, we are bewildered too when we are chucked in the middle of something that’s been going on for a while. We catch-up quick. Gabbar, aka Aditya (Akshay Kumar), heads a secret kill-the-corrupt mission. His honest  minions collect details of who got how much bribe and, depending on their score, bhrashtacharis are moved up and down the corruption rating chart. The one on top is dangled, every Friday, from a lamp post/bridge/flyover, garlanded with files on his corrupt compatriots and a CD from Gabbar where he announces his next target. Gabbar moves department-wise — PWD, police… — and his CDs contain such witty lines: “Our system is like bachche ka used diaper. Kuch geela, kuch dheela.” Taliyan, I say. Though the film's terrible background music is mixed with some of Gabbar Singh’s famous dialogues, there is nothing Gabbar like about Aditya. He’s neither menacing, nor memorable. Aditya holds a sober job and is a humshakalof many one-week-wonders Akshay Kumar has played in the past. Aditya has grabbed the alias because of the reputation of fear it carries, but the film does nothing to make the name fit the character. Because, well, it’s Akshay. Gabbar is on a killing spreeand in Mumbai’s police headquarters, where five nincompoop senior cops are busy chomping on samosas, constable Sadhu (Sunil Grover) is investigating and getting close to Gabbar. Gabbar’s anti-corruption crusade, meanwhile, takes him to a hospital where an instant connect is made with our own feelings about super-speciality, super-smug, super-chor hospitals. This all-violins-out
outing  leads to the film’s real villain, Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar) who repeatedly announces, “I am a brand”. Instantly we know that Gabbar will bajao his band. But only after we are treated to a flashback starring a star and a tragedy that’s so fake that it’s laughable. This is followed by some more tacky fight scenes that involve the same-old slaps, flying kicks, humans smashing into glass windows, tables, chairs, cupboards, and when we finally arrive at the climax we find that this Gabbar doesn't just kill. He also delivers pravachans to the nation's youth who are weaving the future, one post at a time, on Twitter and Facebook. Director Krish and superstar Akshay’s GIB is a hectic, loud film that skids from one episode to another introducing characters — all prefabricated, one-dimensional ones necessary for simulating a vigilante melodrama — and pushing the story to its inevitable end. All vigilante films are devious. They cast us in the role of hapless onlookers as tragedies claim sweet innocents and the only thing left to do is to bay for blood. For our satisfaction, stars have been bludgeoning the corrupt for ages, and saying, take the law in your own hands. Though exploitative and formulaic, many were good films. GIB is a bad film that’s also disturbingly cynical in its plotting. Somewhere in the bombast and bakwas of GIB sits a tiny kernel of truth —  about our ironic, sad lives, about Bharat Sarkar that does everything unscrupulous under the aegis of Satyamev Jayate. The film dips into that — making us weep over our own frustrations, anger — and first lets us draw satisfaction from watching the powerful and corrupt quake with fear and die, and then, pandering shamelessly to our mob mentality, goads us to take action without accountability. The worst message possible in these moronic. Sure, somewhere the slaps that are delivered need to be delivered. Sure, some scenes are funny. But GIB says it’s noble to act, not introspect; that if you are angry, you must be innocent. That’s the biggest lie we tell ourselves. And GIBtells it again and again. The doofus played by Shruti Haasan is totally superfluous to the film. She irritates us with nonsensical chitter-chatter about “according to Google… as per Google…” I googled and, well, according to Google, Ms Haasan has had a successful lip and nose job. So that, perhaps, is why she was hanging around pouting — to exhibit her newly-remodelled face. I fear that in a year’s time all Bollywood actresses will look the same, their faces sitting somewhere in the face-card that moves from Aishwarya Rai to Katrina Kaif. That’s Bollywood’s template of beauty. It’s another matter that Aishwarya and Katrina may not look like themselves in a year’s time. Akshay Kumar sometimes uses a stunt in fight scenes and all villains stand around
as if in a game of Statue, waiting for his kicks to arrive. But he has very healthy gums. His dentist would be proud. He still, however, insists on wearing shirts with hoods. His wife should be worried. Source: ArticleGabbar has ‘nothing to do’ with Sholay: While his character is named after the iconic villain from Sholay, Gabbar is Back’s leading man Akshay Kumar says the film has no other connection to the classic Dharmendra-Amitabh Bachchan caper. “We have just two-three dialogues from Sholay, otherwise GIB has nothing to do with Sholay. The film begins with my character writing an anonymous letter to the (police) commissioner, about corruption. I can’t sign my real name, and Sholay happens to be playing in the background, so I sign it as Gabbar,” Akshay told us. About the South film Ramanaa of which GIB is a remake, Akshay says, “Our film is 60 per cent like Ramanaa but we have added a lot of real incidents. I was told not to watch Ramanaa and I prefer it that way. I don’t want to copy any actor.”  Source: Article‘Gabbar’s not a masala film’: Shruti Haasan, whose film Gabbar is Back releases today, isn’t very happy about it being projected as a masala film. “I don’t know why people call it a masala film. It’s an entertaining film with a message, which is a great balance.” Would that be her favourite genre? “Comedy is a genre I enjoy very much. I come across as serious, but I’m a goofball. I also want to explore action. I trained in it when was young, so maybe I could mix action and music. That'll be great! Maybe perform stunts with an electric guitar,” she says about her filmy fantasy. Shruti shares screen space with two other actresses in the film — Kareena and Chitrangada. How was that? “Kareena’s track is wonderful and it is integral to the story, so I like how it has turned out,” she said. Source: ArticleDecoding Gabbar’s look: Akshay Kumar has a new look in Gabbar and the credit goes to his designer Rick Roy, who planned the look. “In terms of the look, we worked on his hair and beard first. I sat with Akshay and Shabina (the producer) on a style that will work for the character. We explained to him what we had in mind. Akshay was super supportive — he grew his hair and beard exactly the way we wanted it. After that, we worked on a colour palette. We didn’t want any costume to stand out randomly, so we used a lot of dull colours and matte fabrics for his shirts. The point was to give him the look of a no-fuss, cool common man.” Rick says he was impressed that despite being a star, Akshay never behaved like one. “I never heard him raise his voice on sets or throw a fit. It’s my second film with him in three years. Even on a stressful shoot day, you meet him in the morning and you feel happy and positive. Akshay doesn’t interfere. He is all about the character. When he sat with Shabina and me for the initial meetings where I explained the look, he saw the references and sketches I made and said, ‘Cool’. That was all. The only things he told me about were technical things like stretch and dupes and his stunt sequences.” Source: Article,

India 'superhero' Bollywood star back in action after brain surgery

Hrithik teaches a female reporter how to kiss!
Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan is back in action after undergoing brain surgery last month for an injury suffered while performing a stunt for an upcoming film.
Roshan, 39, said he was "doing absolutely fine" as he launched the trailer of "Krrish 3", the latest movie in the hit superhero franchise. "Even with a hole in my brain, my spirit has been intact," Roshan told a news conference in Mumbai on Monday, his first official appearance since his operation on July 7. "Life hits you hard. But it takes you three seconds to decide if you are a superhero or not. I am," he added. Roshan, who enjoys a huge fan following because of his macho on-screen persona, was injured while shooting an action sequence for "Bang Bang", an Indian remake of the Tom Cruise-
Cameron Diaz hit movie "Knight and Day". The injury triggered headaches that were caused by a subdural haematoma or clot, often caused by bleeding in the brain due to a blow to the head. Afterwards, Roshan underwent surgery. Doctors told the actor to rest for four weeks after the operation, delaying the shooting schedule of "Bang Bang". The first two movies in the Krrish series drew huge turnouts at the box office. All three movies have been directed by Roshan's father, Rakesh Roshan. "Krrish 3" will be released in November during Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights which is one of the country's biggest celebrations. World's Dignities Greeted On The Auspicious Day Of Diwali

Diwali

New Delhi, Nov 13 (ANI): The Festival of Lights, Diwali, is being celebrated across India today. The President, the Vice President and the Prime Minister have greeted the nation on the occasion of Diwali. President Pranab Mukherjee, who extended his warm greetings and good wishes to the countrymen in India and around the world on Diwali, called for a pollution free celebration on the occasion. President Obama's Diwali Message
Today, here at home and across the globe, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists will celebrate the holiday of Diwali – the festival of lights. Diwali is a time for gathering with family and friends, often marked with good food and dancing. It is also a time for prayer and reflection about those less fortunate. It is a testament to the compassion of these communities that so many of them have helped those that have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Many who observe this holiday will light the Diya, or lamp, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. As that lamp is lit, we should all recommit ourselves to bring light to any place still facing darkness. Earlier this year, we were reminded of the evil that exists in the world when a gunman walked into the Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and  opened fire. In the wake of that horrible tragedy, we saw the resilience of a community that drew strength from their faith and a sense of solidarity with their neighbors, Sikh and non-Sikh alike. We also saw compassion and love, in the heroic actions of the first responders and the outpouring of support from people across the country. Out of a day of sadness, we were reminded that the beauty of America remains our diversity, and our right to religious freedom. To those celebrating Diwali, I wish you, your families and loved ones Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak. Source: Sikh News Network

David Cameron greets Britons on Diwali
British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday conveyed his best wishes to all the Britons and people across the world celebrating Diwali. “Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone in the UK and across the world a very happy and peaceful Diwali. A festival which celebrates hope over all else, it represents values shared by many of us in the UK,” he said in a statement. “As British Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists join friends and family to celebrate this festival of lights, let us also celebrate the great
cultural, social &  economic contribution they, and generations before them, have made to this country,” he said, praising the contribution to the British society by Indian-origin residents. “So once again, let me wish all a very happy and prosperous Diwali and Saal Mubarak (New Year),” said the British Prime Minister, who hosts an annual Diwali party for a select group of invitees at Downing Street. Source: Deccan Chronicle Pakistan wishes to have "friendly, cooperative and good neighbourly relations" with India as there are tremendous opportunities for the two countries to enhance cooperation for their mutual benefit, President Asif Ali Zardari said. Dharamsala, Nov. 13 (ANI): Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay has conveyed his greetings and best wishes to the people of India on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. In his message, Sangay said: "I just want to wish everybody in India a happy Diwali. Being born and brought up in India I have celebrate Diwali and burst a lot of firecrackers since childhood and looking forward to a very noisy evening and smoky nights for a few days to come." Meanwhile, Speaker of Tibetan parliament in-exile, Penpa Tsering pointed out the mythological significance of the festival. "Diwali is very symbolic. It is symbol of victory of good over evil and that marks the festival of lights. On behalf of all the Tibetans we want to wish all Indians a very happy Diwali," said Tsering. Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated to commemorate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of self-exile and killing Ravana. Source: News Track
Newly elected Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard wishes everyone a Happy Diwali (festival of the lights). This festival holds extra meaning to her as the first Hindu ever elected to Congress.
Transcript for her video message on Diwali: As you know, Diwali is not a fun holiday; but it also represents the victory of truth over untruth, of righteousness over wrong. While this is the time of celebration, this deeper meaning of Diwali could not come at a more appropriate time. As we put the campaigns and election year behind us, it’s time now for all of us to come together, setting aside our differences and find ways to work together, towards the greater and common good. It’s an opportunity to remember that true happiness and true success comes through being of service to others
and not just living for yourself. I personally have faced a variety of challenges in my life whether in the desert of Iraq, in the halls of Washington DC, or along a very tough campaign trail. The one constant for me that has guided me always is this understanding doing my best to be of service to others. I know that by keeping this at the forefront of all that I do, I will not be led astray. The lighting of the lamps on Diwali continues the longstanding tradition of celebration and reflection on the year that is behind us and to pray for the year coming ahead. Please know that as you rejoice and reflect with your families and your community, I send you the warmest aloha, look forward to serve you in Congress, and whish you a very happy Diwali. Source: Channelapa

Sunita Williams greets Indians from space on Diwali: NASA astronaut and flight engineer Sunita Williams appears to touch the Sun in this amazing photograph snapped from space. It was taken during the 32nd expedition to the International Space Station after an epic 6 hour spacewalk on September 5th 2012.
Indians around the world got a special Diwali message from outer space as Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams sent out warm wishes on the occasion from the International Space Station. Floating upside down in the space station as she appeared on the screen before the Indian tricolour for a local TV show, Williams said, "I just want to wish everybody in India and people of Indian origin around the world a happy Diwali". "It is a wonderful festival and I am happy we are part of it up here at the International Space Station," she said. Williams, 47, spoke to Indian-origin student of New York University Riti Bhalla, who as a city-based TV host interviewed Williams on her Diwali special programme. The tricolour was not the only Indian object accompanying Williams in space. She has also carried a picture of the Sanskrit word 'Om' and a copy of the Upanishads, which her father gave to her before she left for the space mission. "I did bring a couple of things that have to do with India from my father, particularly a peaceful 'Om' that stays outside my crew quarters where I sleep and the Upanishads so I can read it while I am up here. "It is a small version (of the Upanishads) but it definitely brings the wisdom to us while we are here and allows us to think of the true meaning of life and what we are doing. "I have a couple of real true reminders of my Indian heritage while I am up here," Williams, dressed in a blue T-shirt and brown shorts, said. Williams expressed appreciation for the support she has received from people in India and for their "heartfelt sincere feelings for the work we are doing up here and how we are doing and for our safe return back home". As she waved goodbye and floated off, Williams said she hopes to visit India next Diwali "to say thank you to all the people in person". The interview would be telecast in 75 countries on the occasion of Diwali. In August, the Indian-American astronaut had displayed the tricolour on board the International Space Station and wished Indians on the eve of their 66th Independence Day. Williams along with Yuri Malenchenko of Russia and Japan's Akihiko left for the ISS aboard a Russian spacecraft on July15. She holds the record of the longest spaceflight (195 days) for a female space traveller. Source: Indian Express, Images: flickr.com, wikimedia.com

A pall of gloom descended on the streets here as word spread about the tragic demise of satirist and filmmaker Jaspal Bhatti, whose mortal remains were consigned to flames following his death in a road accident today. Bhatti (57) breathed his last at a Jalandhar hospital, suffering serious head injuries after his car rammed into a tree near Shahkot in Nakodar area of the district at 2:30 AM. People from all sections of the society reached house number 3040 located in Sector 19 D where Bhatti resided alongwith
his family. His wife Savita showed enough courage before people at an hour of deep crisis for the family. "He (Bhatti) used to send social messages through his satire with lot of perfection," she was heard telling the mourners visiting the house. "He was a courageous man," she said, adding that he never feared the threatening calls he used to receive at times from certain quarters for making fun of them. She recalled that Bhatti never behaved like a celebrity and was always down to earth. Bhatti's son Jasraj, who was at the wheel at the time of accident, was the first to reach his house in an
ambulance from DMC Ludhiana. He entered the house on a stretcher and appeared shell shocked at the turn of events. Later, Bhatti's body was brought from Jalandhar civil hospital in an ambulance, followed by a Punjab police vehicle. His remains were consigned to flames by his son Jasraj at the cremation ground this evening. Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, Punjab Chief Minister's media advisor Harcharan Singh Bains and artistes from Punjabi film fraternity including Gurdas Mann, Jasbir Jassi, Mehar Mittal and Gurpreet Ghuggi. Yash Chopra: King of Romance is no more

Iconic filmmaker Yash Chopra, who was known as Hindi cinema’s “King of Romance” and also made some memorable action films like Deewar, died here on Sunday following dengue infection and multiple organ failure. Chopra, 80, whose upcoming and last film was titled Jab Tak Hain Jaan, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital here on October 13 with dengue. He is survived by wife Pamela and two sons, filmmaker Aditya  Chopra and actor-producer Uday Chopra. The veteran producer-director had attended Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday party with wife Pamela on October 10. It was Chopra’s Deewar which established Bachchan as the “angry young man”. Although he made different kinds of films in the course of his five-
decade career, Chopra is today known mostly for his romantic films like Silsila, Chandni, Dilwale Duhania Le Jayenge, Mohabbatein and Veer Zara. On his 80th birthday on September 27, Chopra, who directed his first film Dhool Ka Phool way back in 1959, announced retirement from direction. The term “Yash Chopra romance”   is used to typify the kind of romantic films the filmmaker gave birth to in Bollywood. Chopra has won several film awards, including six National Film Awards. Born in Lahore to a Punjabi family on September 27, 1932, Chopra moved to India after Partition. His original plan was to pursue a career in engineering. But his passion for filmmaking led him to travel to Mumbai, where he initially worked as an assistant director to I S Johar, and then for his director-producer brother B R Chopra. Encouraged by the success of his films, the Chopra brothers made several more movies together during the late ’50s and ’60s.
Chopra rose to fame in 1965 after the commercially and critically successful drama, Waqt, which pioneered the concept of multi-starrers in Bollywood. In 1973, Chopra founded his own production company, Yash Raj Films, and launched it with Daag: A Poem of Love with the hit onscreen pair of Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna. However, in the ’80s several films he directed and produced failed to leave a mark at the box office, notably Mashaal and Vijay. But Chopra rose like the phoenix with the commercially and critically successful film Chandni, thus beginning his journey of making romantic Hindi films. He then directed and produced the cult classic Lamhe in 1991. His association with Shah Rukh Khan began with the 1993 romantic psychological thriller film Darr, which turned out to be a superhit. Since then, Chopra has directed three more romantic films, all starring Khan — Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Veer-Zaara (2004) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). Shah Rukh has also been a part of films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995),
Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Mohabbatein (2000) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), which were produced by Chopra’s Yash Raj banner. Bollywood Bytes: Juhi Chawla: I am so shocked to hear of his sudden demise. I met him the other day at Amitabh Bachchanji's birthday party and he was joking with me for so long. Getting to work in a Yashji film was the greatest  achievement of my life. I had worked in Aaina, a movie produced by the banner, but when Yashji called me for Darr, I was overwhelmed. On Yashji's set everything was so organised. He had a bound script and he knew exactly what he wanted from his actors. Sridevi: I am deeply saddened by the shocking news of Yashji's passing away. He was so full of warmth and affection whenever we met. He will be missed forever. Kirron Kher: Mr Chopra has been family to us ever since Anupam started working in the industry. He would often have his tea and breakfast at their house even until recently. Losing him has been like losing the hand of an elder that is always on your head in a way of blessing. But the loss will be greatest for Pamela, his wife, who has been by his side throughout - they would always travel together, be together. It is tragic that he couldn't see the release of his last movie. Anil Kapoor: It is a great loss to everyone that Yashji is no more. An entire chapter in the history of Indian cinema is over. I have had the privilege
to work with him in his films as well as those under his banner. He was a man of versatility. My films with him, Vijay, Mashaal and Lamhe, have all been different. Some of his films were way ahead of their time, especially Lamhe. A subject like that, if addressed today, may have worked. That was his vision. Vinod Khanna: I am taken aback by this sad news. One of the few filmmakers with the ability to transcend across time, I have been lucky to have worked with him. Right from the early days, one aspect I admired about him always was his interest in all kinds of cinema. He would keep himself informed of various filmmakers across India and abroad. Maybe this is why he could make films on subjects and themes that were contemporary and sometimes taboo also. Kajol: I am truly shocked. I don't know how to react or what to say. He was a true veteran and an era is over with his passing. He will be missed. Tweets: (1) Amitabh Bachchan ‏@SrBachchan, T 906 - Yash Chopra passes away ..
