Barack Obama writes article in Time Magazine on Indian PM Narendra Modi

President Barack Obama speaks at Fort Hood memorial ceremony
PM Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama
In the profile titled ‘India’s reformer-in-chief’, Obama describes Modi’s life story "from poverty to Prime Minister" as one that reflects the dynamism and potential of India’s rise.: US President Barack Obama it seems is in awe of Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi . In a rare effusive praise Obama has written a profile of Prime Minister Narendra Modi forTime magazine’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people. In the profile titled ‘India’s reformer-in-chief’, Obama describes Modi’s life story “from poverty to Prime Minister” as one that reflects the dynamism and potential ofIndia’s rise. Narendra Modi By Barack Obama India’s reformer-in-chief As a boy, Narendra Modi helped his father sell tea to support their family. Today, he’s the leader of the world’s largest democracy, and his life story—from poverty to Prime Minister—reflects the dynamism and potential of India’s rise. Determined to help more Indians follow in his path, he’s laid out an ambitious vision to reduce extreme poverty, improve education, empower women and girls and unleash India’s true economic potential while confronting climate change. Like India, he transcends the ancient and the modern—a devotee of yoga who connects with Indian citizens on Twitter and imagines a “digital India.” When he came to Washington, Narendra and I visited the memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We reflected on the teachings of King and Gandhi and how the diversity of backgrounds and faiths in our countries is a strength we have to protect. Prime Minister Modi recognizes that more than 1 billion Indians living and succeeding together can be an inspiring model for the world. Barack Obama is 44th US President Source: ArticleImage: flickr.com

Ebola fighters named TIME's 'Person of the Year'

"It was a fight against Ebola. I joined that fight" - Tony Foday, an Ebola burial team supervisor in Freetown, Sierra Leone
WASHINGTON: The TIME magazine has announced its decision to honour the “unprecedented numbers” of doctors and nurses, who responded when Ebola hit an already-weak public health infrastructure, as “Time's Person of the Year.” Terming the epidemic a “war and a warning,” Editor Nancy Gibbs explained how the governments were poorly equipped to respond to the outbreak, the World Health Organisation (WHO) was in denial and “snarled in red tape” and the first responders were accused of “crying wolf as the disease spread,” reported the CNN. She added that the world could sleep at night because a group of men and women were willing to stand up and fight. “For tireless acts of courage and mercy, for buying the world time to boost its defenses, for risking, for persisting, for sacrificing and saving, the Ebola fighters are Time's 2014 Person of the Year,” she said. The TIME magazine's cover will feature five Ebola fighters including, 37-year-old ambulance driver, Foday Gallah, who contracted Ebola while trying to comfort an infected child, Dr. Jerry Brown, a Liberian surgeon who converted his hospital's chapel into one of the country's first treatment centers, Salome Karwah, an Ebola survivor who lost both parents to the disease and undertook the task of counseling patients in Liberia, Ella Watson-Stryker, a Doctors Without Borders health promoter and Dr. Kent Brantly who became the first American to contract Ebola while running a treatment center in Monrovia. According to WHO estimates, about 6,300 people were killed in the epidemic in West Africa. Almost 11,000 confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone while, 6,000 suspected and probable cases loom, the UN agency said. –Agencies. Source: ArticleImage: flickr.com

Prince George Covers Vanity Fair! Take a Look Back at His First Year as a Royal

Can you believe Prince George is almost 1 year old?! In honor of his first birthday, Prince William and Kate Middleton's adorable royal baby boy has landed on the cover of the latest issue of Vanity Fair (on sale this week). In the precious cover pic, little George stares at his papa while being held by mom. The resemblance between the tot and his good-looking parents is undeniable. In the accompanying article, writer Katie Nicholl reveals some surprising insights into George's first year of life. For instance, did you know George wasn't as well behaved as he seemed during his first public appearances? "Kate expressed relief that George behaved well during his first few public appearances," reads the story. "Nicholl reports that for the first few months the prince cried loudly and frequently, and he was not sleeping through the night. Nanny Jessie Webb tried hard to get him into a routine, but the baby prince, who was still breastfeeding, was permanently hungry. Nicholl reveals that it was only in the new year, when Kate introduced solids, that George finally slept through the night." George's needy behavior made Will and Kate a bit worried about their highly publicized tour of New Zealand and Australia. Source: SAM Daily Times

Printed poster lets you play the drums

.Subscribe
A British firm has given a new lease of life to paper by combining traditional print with conventional electronics to create a touch-based interactive poster.
Novalia, which is raising funds to put the technology into production, has created a prototype that lets users play seven different drums on the poster by touching them. Users can also play them wirelessly through their iOS device by connecting an iPad or iPhone. The technology could drag the traditional printed word into a new dawn with outdoor advertising, publishing and packaging just some of the possible applications to benefit. “The future potential for this technology is enormous and unlimited,” said Dr Kate Stone, who launched the company. “Imagine being able to touch a shop display and the product information is instantly downloaded to your smartphone; a magazine you simply touch to personalise the cover; a printed advert with a built-in social media sharing button. Or what about a medicine-bottle label that reminds users to take their pills? It’s an unbelievably exciting field to be involved in.” The interactive poster is created by printing the graphics on the face of the paper substrate. On the reverse, touch sensors are printed on using electrically conductive ink. To this a small, simple circuit board is electrically attached. The circuit board monitors the capacitance of each of the drum sensors and recognises when the graphics are touched, in much the same way as the touchscreen on a smart device recognises touch.Dr Stone studied a PHD at Cambridge University and nearly bankrupted herself by buying an industrial printing press to understand the process and find out if combining electronics and paper in the way she wanted would actually work. Since then she has travelled the world researching modern methods of making the age-old medium of paper more relevant to today’s technology-driven consumer society and has been in demand for talks to leading companies and conferences along the way. Through her work with Cambridge University and ink suppliers, Dr Stone is also developing a unique graphene-based ink. Graphene is a novel substance composed of a single layer of carbon atoms, extracted from graphite, with flexible and conductive properties. The technology is on the verge of going into production, with Novalia setting up a crowdfunding bid through Kickstarter. Taylor Swift for WebMD Magazine December 2012

On relationships: “Everyone starts a relationship well intentioned. No one thinks, ‘This will have a horrific, crazy downfall, and it will be chronicled on an album that teenagers will be singing to themselves in their bedrooms.’” On being happy: “The fact is, my life is amazing, so when I’m getting too much in my own head, I try to say all the things I’m grateful for. It can be simple things—like if I’m complaining about how my cellphone is working slowly, I think about how slowly they worked five years ago. It’s OK to have glass-half-
empty days, but not too many of them. I place a higher priority on being happy than I do on freaking out.” On her new album: “I’m really proud of the record, but I’m always nervous about everything. There’s a great deal of terror that fills my mind before I do anything, really. We’re talking before an album comes out, before a photo shoot, anytime I read my name in print.
There’s a huge amount of pressure and responsibility because millions of people are going to potentially spend their hard-earned money on the album, and there’s a great responsibility for the critics who will write about it, and responsibility for the girl who is going through a breakup and needs a song about what she’s feeling, and responsibility for the girl who doesn’t feel good about herself and needs a song for that, too, and I worry about saying or doing the wrong thing.” Source: Smartologie

2012,the year of the person:Barack Obama

Time magazine has declared the winner of "The Person Of The Year" contest. Guess who – you would have never believed it before it was announced! U.S. President Barack Obama – probably one of the least probable of choices.
By Boris Volkhonsky: To the credit of the organizers of the contest, it should be remembered that the "Person of the Year" title does not necessarily mean an approval of the winner. Adolf Hitler back in 1938, or Joseph Stalin (1939 and 1942), or Ayatollah Khomeini (1979), among others, could hardly expect a word of praise from the editors of a mainstream American magazine. The tradition of naming freaks as laureates is also present in the whole process – otherwise who would ever nominate (least of all, grant the title) Mikhail Gorbachev (1989), or the collective "You" (2006) as representing millions of internet bloggers (including your humble author, probably), or "The Protestor" (2011) representing such diverse phenomena, as, for example, the Tea Party, the Arab Spring, Occupy Movement, or scattered marginal groups protesting on Moscow streets. It is a common practice that before declaring the winner, the Time editorial board consults its readers. This year, the readers' choice was clear – the new leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un. It can be disputed whether he deserved the nomination in 2012, or some thirty years earlier (the global media are not sure about the exact year of his birth which is some time between 1982 and 1984), when he was lucky enough to be born into the ruling family of his country. But anyway, the readers made their choice. Then the editorial board easily discarded it. So the first question concerns the relationship between Time magazine (in fact, any media) and its readers. Who matters more to whom – and aren't the readers really the ones that have the casting vote in the relationship. Definitely, the editors seem to think the other way round. But, coming back to the Person of this particular year – it is not uncommon for Time magazine to name one person two times. Barack Obama was awarded the title back in 2008, and that may be quite understandable even for those who are far from being his fans. His victory in 2008, "The Change" the Americans thought they "Can Believe In", the enthusiasm that swept across the country and the rest of the globe – all this was enough to make Obama s symbolic figure. It remains doubtful why the following year the Nobel Committee awarded him the Nobel Prize, even though he had done nothing at all to demonstrate he was serious in his promises – but that's another story, and such questions should be posed to the Nobel Committee rather that to the Time editors. But after the four years of one of the most unimpressive presidencies in the modern US history, when the country is facing the deepening crisis and swiftly approaching the inevitable "fiscal cliff", and the President has done nothing to prevent it (least so, fulfill most of the promises given back in 2008), the editors' choice is, at least, puzzling. Of course, few would expect the North Korean leader to appeal to the editors' hearts. Also, one would hardly expect people like Julian Assange to receive an honor from American media (sluts from Pussy Riots would seem a more probable choice). But does that mean that the year was totally devoid of any bright characters? A look at the list of the runners-up shows that among other candidates we see the following. Number two is Malala Yousufzai, a Pakistani girl, frightened to death by the violence surrounding her and expressing her fears in her internet diary. Later, her fears were exploited by the elder members of her family to project her as something of a symbol of girls' fight for equal rights. And after she was "framed up" this way, the thugs from Pakistani Taliban shot and severely wounded her, thus adding to the symbolism and ensuring the career of her family elders. Other finalists included: Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi; Bill and Hillary Clinton; Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer; Apple CEO Tim Cook, and the three scientists who discovered the Higgs Boson particle. In this context one may only thank the editors for their choice. But when it comes to the arguments why the choice was eventually made in favor of Barack Obama, one cannot refrain from expressing surprise. Indeed, the logic is brilliant – according to Time managing editor Rick Stengel, Barack Obama was chosen due to his "re-election despite a higher unemployment rate than anybody's had to face in basically in 70 years" and the fact that "He's the first Democrat to actually win two consecutive terms with over 50 percent of the vote" since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. So, the high unemployment rate is a factor that has led to the nomination. And, by the way, Republican President (arguably the greatest American president of post-WWII time) Ronald Reagan was not named "The Person Of the Year". And if Obama's re-election was the core reason, than, frankly, it was Mitt Romney who deserved the title. If the GOP had put forward a more competitive candidate, Barak Obama would hardly have had any chances. Source: Voice of Russia

Leonardo DiCaprio for Details Magazine December 2012

On his current busy schedule: "This has been an exceptional situation. Filming three movies back to back to back, I don't think I've ever done that. In a weird way. I realize these movies are about three different periods in American history, but all have a central character trying to hold on to the privileged life they've been given, by any means necessary." On his "Django Unchained" character: "One of, if not the most, despicable, indulgent, radical characters I've ever read in my life. Writer-directors tend to be very
precious about their material and their words, but Quentin's [Tarantino] whole process is getting input from the actors and adding levels to their characters. A lot of the talks we had specifically about phrenology really took him to a completely different level." On shying away from big-budget franchise films: "I don't know why I choose certain films, I just gravitate toward them and I don't question that."Source: Smartologie

Christina Aguilera Never Commented On Her Weight In New Billboard Interview

Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera's new album, "Lotus," is set to drop on November 13th, and the singer/The Voice judge is featured on the cover of the September 29 issue of Billboard magazine. In the new issue, Christina talks about her new album, how it's been compared to her 2002 album "Stripped," and the two years since she released her fourth studio album, "Bionic." One thing she didn't talk about, however, is her weight. Monday morning several reports claimed that Christina spoke very candidly about her weight in the interview, attributing a made-up quote from a tumblr page, that spread like wildfire, to the Billboard piece. "During the promotion of my album 'Stripped,' I got tired of being a skinny, white girl," the quote, attributed to the "Fighter" singer read. "I am Ecuadorian but people felt so safe passing me off as a skinny, blue-eyed white girl. The quote goes on to say that she was forced to lose 15 pounds quickly by record execs, who "called this serious emergency meeting" about her weight at the time of her "Stripped" tour."I told [producers] during [the 'Lotus'] recording, 'You are working with a fat girl. Know it now and get over it.' They need a reminder sometimes that I don't belong to them." It may sound pretty good, but it turns out Christina never said any of it. "She never said them," her rep tells Entertainment Weekly. The quotes were actually found at a tumblr blog called "Fat Girl In Cheap Clothes," and somehow, inexplicably, the quote was credited to the Billboard interview. Strangely, the last part of the long quote was omitted from nearly all the sites and blogs that reposted it. Maybe it's because it would've been the sure giveaway that she never said any of it. That last part reads, "It's my body. My body can't put anyone in jeopardy of not making money anymore - my body is just not on the table that way anymore. I am 31 my boobs are (son) Max's and my p***y is mine... Sorry." One thing she did say in the interview, though, is that the new album represents "a celebration of the new me, and to me the Lotus has always represented this unbreakable flower that withstands any harsh weather conditions in its surroundings, that withstands time and remains beautiful and strong throughout the years." You can read the real interview with Christina at © 2012 Starpulse.com, Photo Credits: Tina Gill / PR Photos; ©PacificCoastNews.com, Source: Star Pluse

Jennifer Aniston's Engagement Details: From Wedding Plans To Baby Talk

Jennifer Aniston People Magazine
Diners at the high-end, understated Blue Hill restaurant in New York City on Friday, Aug. 10, barely took notice of one of Hollywood's power couples, actress Jennifer Aniston and actor-screenwriter Justin Theroux, quietly celebrating his 41st birthday side by side at an intimate corner table. The two, who had flown into town for the weekend from the Wilmington, N.C. set of Aniston's latest film, We're the Millers, "looked like a long-term couple in love having a romantic dinner," a patron tells PEOPLE. "He looked very relaxed with her," says another diner, Monica Diorello. "They were just enjoying each other's company." This week's issue of PEOPLE features the latest details on how Theroux popped the question to Aniston, 43, during this secret New York getaway, their wedding plans, starting a family, and preparing to live happily ever after. After a 15-month courtship, the couple soon let the world in on their very, very happy secret. On Aug. 12 Theroux's rep exclusively told PEOPLE that the actor "had an amazing birthday on Friday, receiving an extraordinary gift when his girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, accepted his proposal of marriage." While there are no details yet on the ring he gave her, "everyone is really excited for them," says a member of their inner circle. "It's amazing to see how happy Justin makes Jen, and everyone was always hoping that he would propose." A Theroux pal adds of the question-popping: "He's been dying to do it. His friends knew it was coming." After her heart-felt "yes," Aniston and Theroux promptly rang up family and close pals to share their big news – including the actress's father, actor John Aniston, 79, in L.A. "John was one of the first people Jen called," says a source close to him. "He loves how happy Justin makes his daughter, and he more than anyone wants to see her get her happily-ever-after. He said Jen sounded ecstatic and happier than she's ever been." As for the Theroux clan, the actor's sister Elizabeth says Aniston has already won them over. "They're a wonderful, beautiful couple," she says. "We're so happy to welcome her to the family." With Aniston working in Wilmington and Theroux shuttling between his fiancĂ©e's set and L.A. and New York for work, wedding plans might have to wait – or not. "I wouldn't be surprised if they eloped," says his friend. Other pals bet on an intimate, relaxed ceremony, possibly a destination wedding (she does love the beach!). And, after marriage, could children be far behind? "Jen loves babies," adds a source. "They would be great at raising a family together." More details on Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux are in the 8/27/12 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, 8/17. *Also In This Week's 'People'* Exclusive: On The Campaign Bus With The Romneys & Ryans Hollywood's Cutest Babies – Exclusive Photos!
