Two Michigan men and an Ohio man were sentenced for their roles in a large-scale conspiracy to commit bank fraud in several states, including New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and Michigan. News of the sentencing was announced Jan. 20, 2023, by U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Philip R. Sellinger. Syed Abbas, 33, of Westerville, Ohio, was sentenced by videoconference on Jan. 19, 2023, to 16 months in prison. Rana Sharif, 39, of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, and Awaise Dar, 35, of Woodbridge, Virginia, were sentenced by videoconference on Jan. 16, 2023 and Jan. 17, 2023, respectively, to 20 months each in prison. All three individuals previously pleaded guilty before Chief U.S. District Judge Freda L. Wolfson to informations that charged them with conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Judge Wolfson imposed the sentences. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court: From 2018 through April 2020, Abbas, Sharif, Dar, and others conspired to defraud several major banks and electronic merchant processors. The defendants established bank accounts associated with sham entities that had no legitimate purpose and then issued checks payable to other shell companies associated with the criminal organization, knowing that the payor accounts had insufficient funds. The conspirators also conducted numerous fraudulent credit card and debit card transactions between shell companies to credit payee accounts and fraudulently overdraw payor accounts. Members of the conspiracy also used these shell companies to execute temporary refund credits, commonly referred to as “charge-backs,” to checking accounts associated with the criminal organization, where no prior legitimate transaction had occurred. The conspirators withdrew the “existing” funds (through ATMs or bank tellers) that banks and or merchant processors had credited to the payee bank accounts at the time of the fraudulent transaction. Because the conspirators withdrew the credited funds from the payee accounts before the banks could recognize the fraudulent transactions, the banks and merchant processors were left with substantial losses. Law enforcement officials identified approximately 200 bank accounts and 75 merchant credit card processing accounts used to facilitate the conspiracy’s fraudulent schemes. The conspirators’ unlawful activities attempted to cause a $10 million loss on financial institutions and did in fact cause a loss of approximately $3.5 million. In addition to the prison term, Chief Judge Wolfson sentenced each defendant to three years of supervised release. Chief Judge Wolfson also ordered each defendant to pay restitution. Abbas was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $530,523. Sharif was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $2.38 million. Dar was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $2.42 million. Abbas, Sharif, and Dar are among the nine individuals that have been sentenced in the District of New Jersey as part of the criminal scheme. Source: https://www.newsindiatimes.com/

In Acts of the Apostles, Stephen alarms the Jews with his preaching that the true temple is in the heart. He is charged with blasphemy, for which the penalty is stoning. Execution must take place outside the walls of Jerusalem; and Stephen is here shown in the countryside, his hands joined in prayer, submitting quietly to his destiny as the first of Christ's followers to be martyred. Since Stephen was not one of the canonical 12 Apostles, he was considered to be a deacon. Source: Article

Police Investigate Justin Bieber Over Nightclub Brawl
Over the weekend, Justin Bieber was caught up in an incident at a nightclub in Southhampton, New York, that escalated into a brawl and put one person in the hospital. Police are now investigating the incident over allegations the singer instigated the fight at South Pointe and directed his entourage. The pop star reportedly got involved in a verbal confrontation with another clubgoer and was escorted to a waiting car by security guards before the brawl spilled out into the parking lot. Clubber Wayne Rennalls, 22, had to be hospitalized for a black eye and bruised ribs. He later filed a report with police. Although Bieber was reportedly not involved in the physical fight, he was photographed climbing out of his car's sunroof and standing on the hood as the fight escalated. An onlooker told the New York Post, "It
escalated outside when we heard Bieber yelling and talking s**t... He was screaming in Wayne's direction, 'Punk b**ch!' Wayne thought somebody threw something at him. Wayne picked up a small rock and threw it back towards Justin. That's when Wayne heard someone yell, 'You done f**ked up now.' Justin jumped out the sunroof of his car and slid down the car like he was in Die Hard... He dropped his shirt and threw his hat... His people surrounded Wayne." After he was accused of starting the brawl, Bieber tweeted: "The most recent rumors might be the funniest of all. Where do u get this stuff??? #focusedonreality." Source: Starpulse.com

US: Walmart expects continued growth

Walmart is expecting sales to grow throughout this year and next as consumers continue to be attracted by smaller store formats, e-commerce options and reduced prices. The company has also announced that it plans to add around the same amount of store space in the 2014 financial year as it plans for 2013. The plan is also to open more large centres than small in the US, despite the success of the latter. The retailer also touted strong sales at U.S. grocery stores and a big start to holiday layaway sales. In the year since the last investor meeting, WalMart's US arm, by far its topest business, has rebounded from a prolonged slump. At the same time, its international operations have come under scrutiny following a New York Times article in April about alleged bribery at its Mexican unit. There are plans to more than double the number of Neighbourhood Market grocery stores in the US by 2016, which will put pressure on competitors such as Kroger, Safeway and Supervalu. US: Walmart cheaper than Dollar General
Prices at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are lower on average than Family Dollar Stores Inc. and Dollar General Corp. as the world’s to-pest retailer expands its presence in neighborhood markets. Wal-Mart prices were below Dollar General’s 100 percent of the time in household goods and more than 85 percent of the time in grocery, auto supplies, pharmacy and health and beauty aids, according to a study conducted by Bloomberg Industries during the past 22 months. Wal-Mart is opening more stores in residential areas, stepping up competition with dollar stores which are more commonly located in neighborhood markets. Grocery prices at Wal-Mart fell in the first quarter as part of the retailer’s plan to spend $6 billion to cut prices in the category. Dollar stores “have a competitive advantage to Wal-Mart in that their locations are in residential areas,” said Poonam Goyal, a Bloomberg Industries senior analyst based in Skillman, New Jersey. “However, as Wal-Mart ramps up its neighbor market stores, that advantage will no longer hold.” Wal-Mart advanced 0.4 percent to $78.06 at the close in New York. Dollar General, based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, was little changed at $52.03. Family Dollar fell 1 percent to $60.78. Source: bloomberg.com, Source: Fresh Plaza,

Don't believe in size zero: Jennifer Lawrence
Actress Jennifer Lawrence says she eats normally and does not worry about the 'size zero' fad in Hollywood. The 22-year-old shot to fame with her role of Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games" and she says wants to be a good role model to her fans, reported Contactmusic. "Oh god, yes, I am so tired of the lollipops. I mean, if I looked like that I wouldn't be tired of it, obviously, but it's hilarious, the way I am supposedly the overweight one. "Like, they (the paparazzi) got me at the movies yesterday and the caption read something like, 'Curvy star cannot wait to dig into a tub of popcorn'. I mean come on! I'm just a normal girl who likes to eats," she said. The actress takes her role in "The Hunger Games" very seriously and think she has little in common with her tough on-screen alter-ego. "I guess people expect that of me, and if I had to kill something for survival, maybe I would and yeah, maybe I was a tomboy when I was growing up. But I'm definitely a girl now. Sheffield's international students give £120m boost to local economy
Universities hope the news will prompt the government to rethink its policies on international students Sheffield's international students pump more than £120m a year into the city's economy, according to a Sheffield University and Oxford Economics study. Researchers found that their tuition fees and living expenses, as well as visits from relatives, brought around £136m to the wider region of Yorkshire and the Humber. The university announced the findings following concerns that visa changes and political rhetoric are discouraging international students from applying to the UK. The number of postgraduate students travelling from non-EU countries to study at UK universities dropped 1% during the academic year 2011-12 – the first fall in 16 years. Sir Keith Burnett, vice-chancellor at the University of Sheffield, says the study demonstrates the economic benefits overseas students can bring. "Both the university and our students believe the impact of this research and its nationwide implications can influence changes in policy to make sure the UK doesn't unwittingly deter people of the talent of international students, who have a great contribution to make and are such a vital part of the success of British universities." Some 9,370 international students studied at universities in Sheffield 2011-12, around 3% of those coming to the UK. Source: SAM Daily Times

Donna Karan knows what women want
Donna Karan began her career as an assistant designer with Anne Klein in the late 1960s, where she was eventually promoted to associate designer in 1971. As Klein's assistant, Karan was a participant in The Battle of Versailles Fashion Show on November 28, 1973. When Anne Klein herself died in 1974, Takihyo Corporation of Japan became the new owner and Karan, together with her former classmate and friend Louis Dell'Ollio, became head designer of the house. She showed her first women's clothing collection in 1985.[citation needed]. Too much in common? Real-life Barbie and Ken dolls, Valeria Lukyanova and Justin Jedlica came face-to-face for the first time, but they didn't hit it off
By Sadie Whitelocks: Two cosmetically-enhanced models, who pride themselves on looking like real-life Barbie and Ken dolls, met for the first time - but it wasn't love at first sight. Valeria Lukyanova, 23, who sports long peroxide blonde hair, a miniscule waist and large bust, flew from her home town in the Ukraine to New York to meet silicone-pumped Justin Jedlica, 32, for an upcoming episode of Inside Edition. But Miss Lukyanova didn't hit it off with her chiseled male counterpart - especially following his remarks last year that she looked like a drag queen - and she bluntly said after their rendezvous: 'He overdid his lips'.

Obama pays tribute to Newtown shooting victims
President Barack Obama is offering the Connecticut town grappling with the aftermath of a deadly school shooting "the love and prayers of a nation." The president says he is mindful that mere words cannot match the depth of the sorrow in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were killed at an elementary school there Friday. Obama is telling the families of the victims that they are not alone in their grief. He says people all across the country have wept with them. The president is speaking at a vigil following his private meetings with the families and first responders. Obama arrives in Newtown, where 20 children were killed, U.S. President Barack Obama has arrived in Newtown Connecticut, where 26 people were shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday. The head of state is slated to meet with the victims' families and members of rescue services and police. The president is expected to address a gathering before a memorial service for the victims. Last Friday, Adam Lanza shot his Mother at home, after which he proceeded to Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 26 people, 20 of them - children between the ages of six and seven. He later killed himself at the scene. Police find no suspicious items in Newtown church The police
have not found any evidence of suspicious items in the church building in Newtown, Connecticut. Earlier, the parishioners were evacuated after reports came in of a bomb threat. The church is located near Sandy Hook Elementary School, where on Friday 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot 26 people and killed himself. On Sunday night U.S. President Barack Obama, who has arrived in Newtown, will meet with families of those killed, and take part in a memorial service for victims of Friday's tragedy. Connecticut church not in danger after phoned threat A Roman Catholic Church in Newtown,
Connecticut, was evacuated Sunday after a reported bomb threat during mass. Additional security forces and ambulances were summoned to the site. The threat interrupted a busy mass, sent worshippers hurrying from the church and touched off a large police response days after the worst massacre of school-age children in U.S. history. At least a dozen police in camouflage SWAT gear and carrying guns arrived at the St. Rose of Lima Church. The incident comes two days after the attack on the local Elementary School which left 27 dead, including 20 children. U.S. President Barack Obama arrived Sunday in Newtown to meet with families of the victims and attend a memorial service. Voice of Russia, AP, RIA, TASS, indystar.com US: shooting overshadows Christmas joy The U.S. has

entered a second day of mourning over 26 victims of the shooting massacre at the Connecticut school on Friday. Twenty children aged 6 to 7 are among the dead. Six adults were also shot. President Barack Obama is arriving in Newtown on Sunday evening to meet the families of the killed children. The formal appointment of Senator John Kerry to the post of state secretary was postponed due to the tragedy. The names of all 26 people killed by the 20-year-old Adam Lanza were released on Sunday morning. Although this is by far not the first shooting incident in the U.S., it is certainly the most tragic one with twenty children aged 6 to 7 reported among the dead. Twelve girls and eight boys were shot several times, said the chief medical examiner Dr. Wayne Carver. This is not just condolences that the nation now expects from Obama. Strict gun law is needed badly to avoid new attacks in future. This is going to be a very challenging thing to do amid the strongly lobbied National Rifle Association (NRA). This organization comprises 4 million people. The NRA was very active during the recent presidential election campaign calling on US citizens not to choose Obama. They spent some $300,000 on this counter-Obama campaign. Meanwhile, addressing the nation shortly after the attack Obama urged “meaningful action” against gun crime in the US. The question is how successful the president will be in fulfilling his promise. US papers on Sunday offer its readers to take a look back on a series of shootings which have happened in the country over the past five years. How more children should be killed to make the US government change its stance on gun control? The Pew Research Center says the U.S. has the highest gun ownership rate in the world - an average of 88 per 100people. Experts in US history stress that the constitution right to own a gun was not meant to be applied to any citizen but to provide arms to the militia forces that fought for the US independence two centuries ago. Meanwhile, another shooting incident took place in California on Saturday evening. Marcos Gurrola, 42, was arrested after opening fire at a shopping mall in Southern California. Although the gunfire caused panic, luckily no one was injured in the attack. Obama to meet families of school massacre
victims, President Barack Obama arrives in Connecticut on Sunday to join in the mourning for 20 children, all 6 and 7 years old, who were slaughtered by a gunman who forced his way into their school and shot them with a rifle at close range. Obama will meet families of the victims of the shooting and speak at a vigil scheduled for later in the day. Meanwhile, investigators are still trying to figure out what led the gunman to kill 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Voice of Russia, RIA, Tales of heroism emerge from Connecticut school massacre Elementary school library clerk Mary Ann Jacob heard gunshots
and shouted "Lockdown!" to a class of fourth graders. Then she discovered the classroom door wouldn't lock. Quickly, quietly she and other library staff got the 18 children down on the floor and crawled with them to a classroom storage closet. Hiding from the gunman who killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, they barricaded themselves inside by shoving a file cabinet against the door. "We settled them down with paper and crayons," Jacob told reporters on Saturday. The gunfire suddenly ended and police came pounding at the door. But the library staff refused to open it until they slipped a badge under the door, Jacob said. In the aftermath of the massacre, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy on Friday said "evil" had descended upon the small community of Newtown. But emerging a day after the carnage were tales of heroism by school staff members, including the six who died. There was first-grade teacher Vicki Leigh Soto, 27, who police said "put herself between the kids and the gunman's bullets" and whose body was found huddled with the students in a classroom closet, according to The Wall Street Journal. And there were selfless survivors like first-grade teacher Kaitlin Roig. She told ABC News she scrambled her class into a cramped bathroom, locked the door and "told the kids I love them" in case those were the last words they ever heard. A school custodian reportedly raced through the hallways echoing with gunfire to check that classroom doors were locked from the inside, the Newtown Bee newspaper said. The day before the massacre in Connecticut on Friday, lawmakers in Michigan passed a bill - over the objections of the state’s school boards - that would allow people to carry concealed weapons in schools. That same day, Ohio lawmakers passed a bill that would allow guns in cars at the statehouse garage. Earlier in the week, a federal appeals court struck down a ban on carrying concealed weapons in Illinois. And Florida officials announced that they would soon issue their millionth concealed weapon and firearm license - or, as a state news release put it, the program would be “One Million Strong.” In short, the legal and political debate over the nation’s gun laws was following a familiar trajectory: toward fewer restrictions. Now, as the country absorbs yet another mass shooting, this one claiming the lives of young children, both supporters and opponents of stricter gun laws are asking whether the carnage might change that trajectory at the state or national levels. As President Obama used his weekly Saturday address to repeat his impassioned but vague call to take “meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this,” some gun-control advocates said they hoped that the shooting would be a catalyst for change. But supporters of gun control sounded similar notes after other recent mass shootings - including one last year in Tucson in which six people were killed and a member of Congress, Gabrielle Giffords, was wounded - only to see little or no legislative action. And as governors from around the nation condemned the Connecticut shooting and expressed sympathy for its victims, their first flurry of statements, from Democrats and Republicans alike, were far more likely to mention prayer than gun laws. Voice of Russia, Reuters, NY Times Connecticut school massacre: will this ever end? Andrey Fedyashinm:
At least 27 people, besides the killer, have fallen victim to a bloody drama that took place in Newtown in Connecticut. The majority of those killed are children aged from 5 to 10 years old. The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, committed suicide. Regarding the adults, among his victims are his mother and another 5 people, including teachers and kindergarten teachers. U.S. President Barack Obama has declared a 4-day mourning in view of this tragedy. The main question America is asking itself today is for how long it will continue. The massacre in Connecticut is not the first tragedy that has occurred at a U.S. school. In 2007 a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech. Since 1999 similar tragedies have been occurring regularly. During the Obama rule there were 5 tragedies, with a lower number of victims though. However, America has never experienced such a large-scale massacre carried out at a primary school. Immediately after this tragedy Obama delivered a speech in the White House. The questions that arise in the wake of the tragedy are what Barack Obama means when he promises to adopt “effective measures” and whether he will be able to do that. In the past 4 years of his presidency the gun control laws have been softened in many U.S. States. None of the U.S. presidents has ever dared to throw an open challenge to the powerful gun lobby in the USA as well as to the National Rifle Association of America, which is its main agency. The second amendment to the Constitution guarantees U.S. citizens individual right to possess and keep firearms. Russia must also draw conclusions from the Newtown massacre, Director of the Strategic Planning Institute (Russia) Alexander Gusev says. "This tragedy must sober all those who defend arms possession. Mankind must learn a lesson from the past because weapons not only guarantees protection but can cause death in people around." One of the most well-known supporters of tightening control over weapons trade in the USA is New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. After the tragedy in Connecticut he said that the situation is becoming unbearable, adding that all appeals for “effective measures” alone are insufficient. The President must submit a relevant law to the Congress helpful in settling this problem. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the leaders of many countries, including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, have offered their condolences in view of the bloody tragedy in Connecticut. Russians in Connecticut school sympathy outpour, Russians continue to offer
expressions of sympathy to the United States over the Connecticut school shootings, in which a mentally deranged young man, one Adam Lanza, killed his mother and 26 people, including 20 children, at a Newtown elementary school. People in Moscow have brought a heap of toys and flowers to the US Embassy. Numerous candles have also been lit. On Saturday morning, President Barack Obama received condolences from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Reports from Newtown say the killer turned his gun on himself after winding up his shooting spree. Putin offers condolences on Connecticut tragedy to Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered heartfelt condolences to his US counterpart, Barack
Obama, on Friday’s tragedy at a Connecticut primary school. We are particularly grieved by the fact, the Russian leader writes in his telegram, that the victims are mostly children. The Russian President asked Barack Obama to convey words of compassion and sympathy to the next of kin of the killed children and said he empathized with the entire American nation. 28 people, including 20 children, aged 5 to 10, died in a shooting spree at a primary school at Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday. The attacker, a 20-year old Adam Lanza, armed with two handguns, also killed his own mother, who was a teacher. He was found dead in the school building shortly afterwards. He had most likely committed suicide. The motives of the crime have not yet been known. President Obama has declared a four-day period of national mourning over the tragedy. US president declares 4-day mourning for killed children in Connecticut The U.S. President has
announced a 4-day mourning across the country over victims of the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. "The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," the president said at a White House press conference. "They had their entire lives ahead of them." "As a country, we have been through this too many times, we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics,” said Obama, as tears streamed from his eyes. 28 people, including 20 children, were killed when 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza burst into an elementary school in Newtown. At least three people were wounded in the incident. Three weapons have been recovered from the slain gunman, identified by law enforcement as 20-year-old, Adam Lanza. Police say the suspect was the son of Nancy Lanza, a kindergarten teacher at Shady Hook. The suspect’s older brother, 24-year-old Ryan of Hoboken, N.J., is being questioned by the authorities. According to the Daily Mail the body of Adam Lanza's father was found at his home in Newton. The shooter had no accomplices. He was found dead inside the school building – possibly, after committing suicide. The Associated Press reports that Lanza's girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey. Multiple media outlets are reporting that the school’s principal and psychologist are also among the deceased. Police are currently searching for the suspect's girlfriend and another person who have been reported missing. Both state and local police are still on the scene at Shady Hook and the superintendent has ordered all schools in the district, both public and private, to be placed on lockdown. Lt. J. Paul Vance of the state police department said that both on-duty and off-duty officers responded to the emergency. Shady Hook, around 12 miles from the town of Danbury, CT, normally has around 600 students in grades kindergarten through four. Mark Boughton, mayor of Danbury, tells CNN three victims have been sent to a hospital in his city in “very serious” condition, though he declined to comment on their age or identity. Newtown School Shooting Live: Watch live streaming video at livestream.com, The 20-year-old gunman, who law enforcement sources identified as Adam Lanza, fired what witnesses described as dozens of shots at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which serves children from ages 5 to 10. Authorities found 18 children and seven adults, including the gunman, dead at the school, and two children were pronounced dead later after being taken to a hospital. Another adult was found dead at a related crime scene in Newtown, bringing the toll to 28, state police Lieutenant Paul Vance said. As reports of the shooting spread, panicked parents rushed to the school searching for their children as students covered in blood were being carried out of the building. President Barack Obama, wiping away tears and pausing to collect his emotions in an address to the nation, mourned the "beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old" who were killed. "Our hearts are broken today, for the parents, and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children and for the families of the adults who were lost," Obama said, his voice cracking. "Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early and there are no words that will ease their pain," said Obama, who has two young daughters. "Evil visited this community today," Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy told reporters. The New York Times reported that the gunman walked into a classroom where his mother was a teacher, shot his mother and then 20 students, most in the same classroom, before shooting five other adults and killing himself. One other person was shot at the school and survived, the Times said. Other media reports said the gunman's mother was found dead at a house nearby. Adam Lanza's brother, Ryan Lanza, was "either in custody or being questioned," a law enforcement source said. The gunman was dead inside the school, Vance said. The Times reported he used a Sig Sauer and a Glock, both handguns, and said police also found at the scene a Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine, a rifle, that they believe belonged to him. The holiday season tragedy was the second shooting rampage in the United States this week and the latest in a series of mass killings this year, and was certain to revive a debate about U.S. gun laws. President Obama's Diwali Message
Today, here at home and across the globe, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists will celebrate the holiday of Diwali – the festival of lights. Diwali is a time for gathering with family and friends, often marked with good food and dancing. It is also a time for prayer and reflection about those less fortunate. It is a testament to the compassion of these communities that so many of them have helped those that have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Many who observe this holiday will light the Diya, or lamp, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. As that lamp is lit, we should all recommit ourselves to bring light to any place still facing darkness. Earlier this year, we were reminded of the evil that exists in the world when a gunman walked into the Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and opened fire. In the wake of that horrible tragedy, we saw the resilience of a community that drew strength from their faith and a sense of solidarity with their neighbors, Sikh and non-Sikh alike. We also saw compassion and love, in the heroic actions of the first responders and the outpouring of support from people across the country. Out of a day of sadness, we were reminded that the beauty of America remains our diversity, and our right to religious freedom. To those celebrating Diwali, I wish you, your families and loved ones Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak. Source: Sikh News Network

Newly elected Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard wishes everyone a Happy Diwali (festival of the lights). This festival holds extra meaning to her as the first Hindu ever elected to Congress.
Transcript for her video message on Diwali: As you know, Diwali is not a fun holiday; but it also represents the victory of truth over untruth, of righteousness over wrong. While this is the time of celebration, this deeper meaning of Diwali could not come at a more appropriate time. As we put the campaigns and election year behind us, it’s time now for all of us to come together, setting aside our differences and find ways to work together, towards the greater and common good. It’s an opportunity to remember that true happiness and true success comes through being of service to others
and not just living for yourself. I personally have faced a variety of challenges in my life whether in the desert of Iraq, in the halls of Washington DC, or along a very tough campaign trail. The one constant for me that has guided me always is this understanding doing my best to be of service to others. I know that by keeping this at the forefront of all that I do, I will not be led astray. The lighting of the lamps on Diwali continues the longstanding tradition of celebration and reflection on the year that is behind us and to pray for the year coming ahead. Please know that as you rejoice and reflect with your families and your community, I send you the warmest aloha, look forward to serve you in Congress, and whish you a very happy Diwali. Sunita Williams greets Indians from space on Diwali: NASA astronaut and flight engineer Sunita Williams appears to touch the Sun in this amazing photograph snapped from space. It was taken during the 32nd expedition to the International Space Station after an epic 6 hour spacewalk on September 5th 2012.
Indians around the world got a special Diwali message from outer space as Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams sent out warm wishes on the occasion from the International Space Station. Floating upside down in the space station as she appeared on the screen before the Indian tricolour for a local TV show, Williams said, "I just want to wish everybody in India and people of Indian origin around the world a happy Diwali". "It is a wonderful festival and I am happy we are part of it up here at the International Space Station," she said. Williams, 47, spoke to Indian-origin student of New York University Riti Bhalla, who as a city-based TV host interviewed Williams on her Diwali special programme. The tricolour was not the only Indian object accompanying Williams in space. She has also carried a picture of the Sanskrit word 'Om' and a copy of the Upanishads, which her father gave to her before she left for the space mission. "I did bring a couple of things that have to do with India from my father, particularly a peaceful 'Om' that stays outside my crew quarters where I sleep and the Upanishads so I can read it while I am up here. "It is a small version (of the Upanishads) but it definitely brings the wisdom to us while we are here and allows us to think of the true meaning of life and what we are doing. "I have a couple of real true reminders of my Indian heritage while I am up here," Williams, dressed in a blue T-shirt and brown shorts, said. Williams expressed appreciation for the support she has received from people in India and for their "heartfelt sincere feelings for the work we are doing up here and how we are doing and for our safe return back home". As she waved goodbye and floated off, Williams said she hopes to visit India next Diwali "to say thank you to all the people in person". The interview would be telecast in 75 countries on the occasion of Diwali. In August, the Indian-American astronaut had displayed the tricolour on board the International Space Station and wished Indians on the eve of their 66th Independence Day. Williams along with Yuri Malenchenko of Russia and Japan's Akihiko left for the ISS aboard a Russian spacecraft on July15. She holds the record of the longest spaceflight (195 days) for a female space traveller. Source: Indian Express, Images: flickr.com, wikimedia.com

Landor, Penn Schoen Berland, Forbes announce World’s Most Powerful Brands

New York: The battle for brand supremacy rages on, with Apple, Coca-Cola, and Microsoft taking the top three spots in Forbes’ World’s Most Powerful Brands list, published today on Forbes.com, with consumer perception data provided by Landor and Penn Schoen Berland (PSB). The results will also appear in the 22 October print edition of Forbes magazine. “Brand managers often look within their organizations when trying to outsmart and outdo the competition, but we believe the consumer is often king and these results support that,” said Billy Mann, managing director at Penn Schoen Berland. “The brands that made this list are those that make it a point to enable people to do things – better, faster, and in a more authentic way. It’s the reason why there are so many tech and consumer brands that resonate with us in an intrinsic way on this list.” Surveying 2,000 adults in Brazil, China, Germany, India, the UK, and US, Landor and PSB evaluated brands on 12 attributes of purpose, to give Forbes a list of brands that consumers perceive are leaders in their categories. Among the attributes tested were Is honest and trustworthy; Invests in its customers; Positively impacts the everyday lives of consumers; and Invests in innovative ideas and research. In his analysis of the findings for Forbes.com Allen Adamson, managing director of the New York office of Landor, said, “It used to be that consumers judged brands on pretty simple criteria, but today they’re being judged on factors that go above and beyond just delivering a decent product or service. To have an edge and keep it, brands have to deliver on a higher purpose. And, while all brands should aspire to be number one on every dimension of purpose, they should first take the time to understand what each really means – to them and their customers.” Methodology To determine the best brands, Forbes started with a universe of more than 200 global brands. Each brand had to have more than a token presence in the U.S., which eliminated some big brands like Spanish apparel retailer Zara and China Mobile, which is the world’s largest mobile phone provider. Forbes then valued the brands based on their financial metrics; the first step was to determine earnings before interest and taxes for each brand. Forbes averaged those earnings over the past three years and subtracted from earnings a charge of 8% of the brand’s capital employed, figuring a generic brand should be able to earn at least 8% on this capital. Forbes applied the maximum corporate tax rate in the parent company’s home country to that net earnings figure, then allocated a percentage of those earnings to the brand based on the role brands play in each industry. (Brands are crucial when it comes to beverages and luxury goods, but not so much, say, with airlines, when price and convenience are more important.) To this net brand earnings number, they applied the average price-to-earnings multiple over the past three years to arrive at the final brand value. For privately held outfits we applied an earnings multiple for a comparable public company. Forbes then provided Landor and PSB with 130 brand names that were each valued at more than $2.5 billion. The firms surveyed 2,000 global consumers on their perceptions of the brands on 12 attributes like: “invests in innovative ideas and research,” “positively impacts the everyday lives of its customers, “maintains high standards of quality in its products” and “understands and addressees my unique needs.” Landor and PSB averaged the ratings for each attribute and added the scores together to derive at a sum score for each brand. Forbes indexed the consumer perception scores and brand values so the most valuable brand (Apple) scored 100 for value and the best with consumers (Microsoft) scored 100 on perception. Forbes averaged those two score together to determine the World’s Most Powerful Brands. The brand value ultimately carries more weight because of the wide disparity in values, which range within the top 100 from Apple at $87.1 billion to Armani at $3.1 billion.
