(IANS) Bollywood may be considered a male dominated industry by many, but 2012 saw VidyaBalan, Kareena Kapoor and Sridevi becoming the champions of change by carrying films on their more than able shoulders and establishing that actresses are more than just a glamour quotient with the success of their ventures. "Kahaani", featuring Vidya Balan, who had already challenged the male bastion with her 2011 big hit "The Dirty Picture", was the first female-centric film of the year that hit the bull's eye. Made on a shoestring budget of Rs.8 crore, Sujoy Ghosh-directed "Kahaani" revolved around seven-month pregnant Vidya Bagchi. High on suspense, thrill and drama, the film entertained audiences so much so that it became a gold spinner by raking in Rs.59.26 crore at the box-office. Following the success of the film, Vidya commented: "Women are taking centrestage in various walks of life all over the country and cinema is just a reflection of that. I'm happy to be part of the film that is celebrating the new role of women.""Kahaani" was followed by the release of Karisma Kapoor's comeback film "Dangerous Ishhq", in which she played a supermodel who undergoes past-life regression. The story spanned across 500 years. Though it fared averagely, Karisma's acting was appreciated. Although few in number, women-centric films stood out among big-budget and big-starrer ones and forced everyone to sit up and take notice. One of them was Bipasha Basu-starrer "Raaz 3", which turned out to be a saving grace for the actress who has not given any substantial hits in recent times. She not only won critical acclaim for her portrayal of a successful actress struggling to keep up with the stardom but her film also became a hit with an earning of reportedly Rs.70 crore. The success of "Raaz 3" was followed by Kareena Kapoor-starrer "Heroine". Made at Rs.32 crore, including marketing and promotion costs, it did good business and grossed Rs.44.25 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh welcomed the change. "Making women-centric films was earlier considered a risky proposition. But actresses like Vidya, Kareena and Sridevi have turned out to be game-changers. Their films have not only done well at the domestic box-office, but also in overseas market. These actresses have brought in a new wave of change and it seems to be a positive trend." It's a known fact that Sridevi used to have a magical presence on the big screen and her charm remained intact even when she returned after 15 years with "English Vinglish". Her portrayal of a non-English speaking housewife who decides to learn English to keep up with her children and husband in Gaurie Shinde's directorial debut struck an emotional connect with all and sundry. Shinde said that her mother was the inspiration for this film. "Most people in India struggle with this language. It is the insecurity and insensitivity that I have shown in the film," she added. Reportedly made at a budget of Rs.15 core, it earned Rs.45.78 crore worldwide in 10 days. Some other noticeable women-centric films that came out were "Jalpari" and "Jism 2". Historian S.M.M. Ausaja too feels that the "year has been really good in terms of women-centric films working at the box-office, whether it is Vidya Balan, Kareena Kapoor or Sridevi". She however adds: "I wouldn't say it will bring a new wave in the film industry." "There was a time when in the 1930s actresses were shown in a bigger way on film posters than the actors. So times keep changing. Bollywood still remains male- dominated," he said. But Vidya said what is important is that new kinds of roles are being written for actresses and feels a lot has changed over the years. "New kinds of roles are being written for them and they get such a wide variety to play on screen. I'm glad that I am working in this era where different roles are being written for women. I credit the filmmakers for bringing in such a big change," Vidya said. *** Vidya, Sridevi: Actresses who made a difference in 2012 (2012 in Retrospect)

Mother's values tied to baby's health
Washington, Dec 4 (IANS) The value an expectant mother places on her family can tell how healthy a baby is going to be three years later. These findings from University of Southern California (USC) suggest that one's culture is a resource that can provide tangible physical health benefits. "We know that social support has profound health implications. Yet in this case, this is more a story of beliefs than of actual family support," said Cleopatra Abdou, assistant professor at USC Davis School of Gerontology, the journal Social Science & Medicine reports. Abdou studied 4,633 socio-economically disadvantaged women, gauging their "familism" or, more specifically, their beliefs about familial roles and responsibilities, using a questionnaire, according to an USC statement. Familism was determined by responses to statements such as, "single moms can do just as well as married parents," or "it is better for children if their parents are married." Abdou then tracked the health of their children and found that for every one point increase in familism, there was a 71 gram increase in birth weight independent of a whole host of other factors-including the gender of the infant or whether the mother was married. Average birth weight in the United States is roughly 3.4 kg. Low birth weight, typically defined as under 2.5 kg, has been linked to health problems later in life. Higher familism also predicted lower rates of asthma in the children up to three years later. Though one might expect to see healthier children from mothers who reported strong family support, familism is a cultural measure that exists outside of an individual's actual circumstances. "Cultural beliefs and ideals can be distinct from one's present reality. Familism is about beliefs and ideals within families. That's why familism is referred to as a cultural resource," Abdou said. President Obama's Diwali Message
Today, here at home and across the globe, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists will celebrate the holiday of Diwali – the festival of lights. Diwali is a time for gathering with family and friends, often marked with good food and dancing. It is also a time for prayer and reflection about those less fortunate. It is a testament to the compassion of these communities that so many of them have helped those that have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Many who observe this holiday will light the Diya, or lamp, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. As that lamp is lit, we should all recommit ourselves to bring light to any place still facing darkness. Earlier this year, we were reminded of the evil that exists in the world when a gunman walked into the Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and opened fire. In the wake of that horrible tragedy, we saw the resilience of a community that drew strength from their faith and a sense of solidarity with their neighbors, Sikh and non-Sikh alike. We also saw compassion and love, in the heroic actions of the first responders and the outpouring of support from people across the country. Out of a day of sadness, we were reminded that the beauty of America remains our diversity, and our right to religious freedom. To those celebrating Diwali, I wish you, your families and loved ones Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak. Source: Sikh News Network

In his message, Sangay said: "I just want to wish everybody in India a happy Diwali. Being born and brought up in India I have celebrate Diwali and burst a lot of firecrackers since childhood and looking forward to a very noisy evening and smoky nights for a few days to come." Meanwhile, Speaker of Tibetan parliament in-exile, Penpa Tsering pointed out the mythological significance of the festival. "Diwali is very symbolic. It is symbol of victory of good over evil and that marks the festival of lights. On behalf of all the Tibetans we want to wish all Indians a very happy Diwali," said Tsering. Newly elected Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard wishes everyone a Happy Diwali (festival of the lights). This festival holds extra meaning to her as the first Hindu ever elected to Congress.
Transcript for her video message on Diwali: As you know, Diwali is not a fun holiday; but it also represents the victory of truth over untruth, of righteousness over wrong. While this is the time of celebration, this deeper meaning of Diwali could not come at a more appropriate time. As we put the campaigns and election year behind us, it’s time now for all of us to come together, setting aside our differences and find ways to work together, towards the greater and common good. It’s an opportunity to remember that true happiness and true success comes through being of service to others
and not just living for yourself. I personally have faced a variety of challenges in my life whether in the desert of Iraq, in the halls of Washington DC, or along a very tough campaign trail. The one constant for me that has guided me always is this understanding doing my best to be of service to others. I know that by keeping this at the forefront of all that I do, I will not be led astray. The lighting of the lamps on Diwali continues the longstanding tradition of celebration and reflection on the year that is behind us and to pray for the year coming ahead. Please know that as you rejoice and reflect with your families and your community, I send you the warmest aloha, look forward to serve you in Congress, and whish you a very happy Diwali. Sunita Williams greets Indians from space on Diwali: NASA astronaut and flight engineer Sunita Williams appears to touch the Sun in this amazing photograph snapped from space. It was taken during the 32nd expedition to the International Space Station after an epic 6 hour spacewalk on September 5th 2012.
Indians around the world got a special Diwali message from outer space as Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams sent out warm wishes on the occasion from the International Space Station. Floating upside down in the space station as she appeared on the screen before the Indian tricolour for a local TV show, Williams said, "I just want to wish everybody in India and people of Indian origin around the world a happy Diwali". "It is a wonderful festival and I am happy we are part of it up here at the International Space Station," she said. Williams, 47, spoke to Indian-origin student of New York University Riti Bhalla, who as a city-based TV host interviewed Williams on her Diwali special programme. The tricolour was not the only Indian object accompanying Williams in space. She has also carried a picture of the Sanskrit word 'Om' and a copy of the Upanishads, which her father gave to her before she left for the space mission. "I did bring a couple of things that have to do with India from my father, particularly a peaceful 'Om' that stays outside my crew quarters where I sleep and the Upanishads so I can read it while I am up here. "It is a small version (of the Upanishads) but it definitely brings the wisdom to us while we are here and allows us to think of the true meaning of life and what we are doing. "I have a couple of real true reminders of my Indian heritage while I am up here," Williams, dressed in a blue T-shirt and brown shorts, said. Williams expressed appreciation for the support she has received from people in India and for their "heartfelt sincere feelings for the work we are doing up here and how we are doing and for our safe return back home". As she waved goodbye and floated off, Williams said she hopes to visit India next Diwali "to say thank you to all the people in person". The interview would be telecast in 75 countries on the occasion of Diwali. In August, the Indian-American astronaut had displayed the tricolour on board the International Space Station and wished Indians on the eve of their 66th Independence Day. Williams along with Yuri Malenchenko of Russia and Japan's Akihiko left for the ISS aboard a Russian spacecraft on July15. She holds the record of the longest spaceflight (195 days) for a female space traveller. Source: Indian Express, Images: flickr.com, wikimedia.com

Milk protein can reduce growth rate of cancer cells: study

Swedish scientists have discovered that a milk protein with known health effects can significantly reduce the growth rate of colon cancer cells. Researchers from the University of Lund, Sweden found that lactoferricin4-14 (Lfcin4-14) can lower growth rate of colon cancer cells over time by prolonging the period of the cell cycle before chromosomes are replicated. In the study, treatment with Lfcin4-14 reduced DNA damage in colon cancer cells exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. "We previously hypothesised that the prolongation of the cell cycle in colon cancer cells as a result of Lfcin4-14 treatment may give the cells extra time for DNA repair," said one of the lead investigators, Professor Stina Oredsson. "Indeed, UV light-induced damage was decreased in colon cancer cells treated with Lfcin4-14 compared with controls. The differences were small but significant," Oredsson said in a statement. Investigators exposed colon cancer cells to UV light that caused DNA damage and then grew the cells in the absence or presence of Lfcin4-14. They evaluated DNA damage using a sensitive technique known as comet assay. After the cells are processed, the cells with DNA damage resemble a comet with a tail, and the intensity of the tail compared to the comet head indicates the number of DNA breaks. UV light exposure resulted in an increase in the number of comets while treatment with Lfcin4-14 reduced the number of comets in UV light-exposed cells. To understand the mechanism by which Lfcin4-14 reduced DNA damage, investigators evaluated the levels of several proteins involved in cell cycle progression, DNA repair, and cell death. "Our data suggest that the effects of Lfcin4-14 in prolonging the cell cycle may contribute to the cancer preventive effect of milk. This must be further investigated in different systems," Oredsson concluded. The study was published in the Journal of Dairy Science.Imge Link Blogspot, Source: Indian Express

A Letter to My Dog
If you needed proof that New Zealanders are a nation of dog lovers you only have to spend a minute on new blog ‘A Letter to My Dog’ (www.alettertomydog.co.nz).The response to the blog has been overwhelming. New Zealanders have opened their hearts and the letters have come flooding in. From the heartbreaking to the heartwarming, it’s impossible not to get sucked into the many tales of extraordinary four-legged friends. We don’t know how we’d live without these animals, and for many of us who have lost them the pain is immense and long lasting. Even years later we grieve for our special pets. There is still time for owners across the country to submit a letter to their pooch, along with their favourite photo of the dog. Exceptional letter writers and their canine recipients will be contacted for inclusion in a book of the same title, which will be sold exclusively through Whitcoulls stores later this year. The book and blog are part of an international undertaking and the book will include letters from the US version of the project, which was developed by renowned photographer Robin Layton. The American letters include a range of everyday people alongside celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Hilary Duff. A contribution from the proceeds of the book will go to Paw Justice to help the charitable organisation continue its work against animal cruelty. A small selection of excerpts from the letters are below, see the blog for more…Dear Harry: “Harry, I owe you so much. People say ‘they’re just dog’, but those people must never have known the simple joy a dog can bring into your life, and the way they teach you to see value in the small things in life… Whatever we do for you in your all too short life can never repay you for what you have given to us so freely, your trust and your love. Thank you for believing in us. We won’t let you down.” Full letter: http://www.alettertomydog.co.nz/2012/05/17/dear-harry/, Dear Abbie Dog: “You came into my life when we both needed rescuing. You from a previous abuser, me, recovering a bad accident… We may have saved you years ago, but, you have repaid us over and over, with love and loyalty.” Full letter here: http://www.alettertomydog.co.nz/2012/05/16/dear-abbie-dog/, To my Diggy Dog: It’s been over two years since I lost you, and the pain of that loss still bubbles up inside of me today, vicious and unexpected…. A week before my twenty-second birthday, we said our goodbyes. I wear a talisman to remind me of you – a stone from our driveway you once gave me in a singing moment of joy. That is how I try to remember you, but I’d rather not have to remember you. I wish you were still here.Full letter here: http://www.alettertomydog.co.nz/2012/05/15/to-my-diggy-dog/, About Paw Justice: Paw Justice is a charitable organisation that was formed in 2009 to help deal with the sickening problem of animal abuse and neglect against pets in New Zealand. Such abuse has grown at alarming rates, both in frequency and severity. Paw Justice is standing up for the 1.6 million cats and dogs that live as part of a family in New Zealand. The organisation believes in uniting good pet owners and animal lovers together and sending a loud message that harming animals is wrong. www.pawjustice.co.nzBeattie's Source: Beatties Book Blog

Ayurveda Music Therapy
Music in musical therapy: Music is a universal language. It influences all levels of human existence. It is a medium for communication, which can be both a pleasant and healing experience. Modern science and medicine are now rediscovering the healing powers of music. And music therapy -- the specialized use of music in treating persons with special needs in mental and physical health, rehabilitation and special education -- is gaining ground. In the West it is now an accepted form of treatment even within orthodox medical practice. Music is an age-old part of Ayurveda, the holistic science which promotes a happy and healthy lifestyle. From time immemorial, music has been a part of Indian culture. In the Vedas too, music has an important place. The 'Samveda' is full of music. The doshas

like Vata, Pitta and Kapha can be controlled effectively by Music Therapy. Great composers of Indian classical music have attempted music therapy down the years. Legend has it that classical music maestro Thyagaraja brought a dead person back to life with his composition. It is believed that music stimulates the pituitary gland, whose secretions affect the nervous system and the flow of blood. It is believed that for healing with music, it is necessary to vibrate the cells of the body, for it is through these vibrations that the diseased person's consciousness can be changed effectively to promote health. The right kind of music helps one relax and refresh. Even during the course of working, light music improves efficiency. Listening to music helps control negative aspects of our personalities like worry,

bias and anger. In addition, it can help cure headache, abdominal pain and tension. Music therapy is one of the most effective ways of controlling emotions, blood pressure and restoring the functioning of the liver. The Raga Research Centre in Chennai,India. is currently making a comprehensive study of Indian ragas and evaluating their therapeutic potential with the help of musicians, doctors and psychiatrists. and pain, too. Music is capable of improving happiness, peace, health and concentration. It is however important to know the method and duration for which Music Therapy is to be administered. This knowledge can be obtained through regular experiments and experience. The first step towards this is the correct diagnosis of the disease and then the selection of the precise raga that will be helpful. Now Bhagvad Gita translated in Polish languages
News Track India: Famous holy book Bhadvad Gita has notices another mark when in Catholic dominated Poland it has been translated in police for the first time. Once when it is facing a proposed ban in Russian state, certainly the piece of news is satisfactory for many. A polish lady Anna Racinska who has done her Phd in Sanskrit has done the above translation. It is amazing that Racinska has spent almost a decade in Varanasi to master the nuances of Sanskrit. A late bloomer, Racinska is in her 60s and completed her doctorate from the Oriental Institute of Warsaw University two years ago. Today in their home, all the children and parents speak Sanskrit fluently, and they converse normally in Sanskrit. It may seem odd to outsiders, but it is normal routine in their home. These days the youngest sibling has adopted an Indian name, Yoganand, and he lives in Varanasi. He and his mother were learning Sanskrit together for many years. Another son, Phillip, is doing his doctorate in Sanskrit and has visited India more than 12 times. These children collect their own money to go to India and they give private lessons in Hindi and Sanskrit in Warsaw. Such is their commitment and passion for Sanskrit. Janusz Krzyzowski, a leading Indologist and president of the Indo-Polish Cultural Committee said that her dedication and her labour of love have done wonders. It is a great achievement for Anna Racinska that she remained unknown for many years, and then all of a sudden she has obliged us in Poland with a great translation of a great book. LNJ Denim:Innovating, increasing capacity to capture market
LNJ Denim, from LNJ Bhilwara Group, launched its denim fabric production in 2007. Being one of the youngest players in the Indian denim fabric business, it has managed to create a niche with its product line and has gained a considerable share in the export and domestic market. Talking about the successful journey, Y C Gupta, Chief Executive at LNJ Bhilwara opines, “Initially, we faced teething problems since we didn’t know what to develop. Gradually, because of our strength in yarns, we could develop several varieties of the fabric and our market reach expanded. With our understanding of the yarns and fabrics, in-house finishing, liquid indigo dyeing and rope dyeing capacity and foreign certifications, we gained credibility in the market. Since we were not into volumes, we were able to create unique products, which helped us reach out to the big brands.” Today, LNJ produces 1.5 million meters of denim a month, 40 per cent of which is exported and 60 per cent goes to the domestic market. It supplies to top domestic brands like: Pepe, Levi’s, Spykar, and Mufti. Global brands like Jack &Jones, Zara, Gap, Polo Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Marlboro Classic, Mustang Germany, Levi’s Europe, Levi’s US, Tommy Hilfiger, Debenhams and Wrangler et al also buy from them. “Ideally, we want to balance between selling 50 per cent to domestic and 50 per cent to international players since no market is stable,” he adds.
