I did not want to break down in front of Yuvi: Sachin
Sachin Tendulkar today said that he was scared of breaking down in front of Yuvraj Singh when he met the left-handed batsman in London after his treatment in the United States for a rare germ cell cancer. "When I went to meet him in London, I was telling my wife (Anjali) that I don't want to break down when I see him. I met him and gave him a tight hug. We enjoyed a meal and from the way he (Yuvraj) ate, I was convinced that he is back on track," Tendulkar told a select gathering during the release of Yuvraj's book "The Test of My Life'. It was a poignant evening today with the likes of Tendulkar, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and latest batting star Virat Kohli recollecting stories and their emotional experience during Yuvraj's fight with cancer. "When I saw my wife discussing medical terms with Yuvraj, I realised what he has been going through. He is like my younger brother and I would ask God why it (the illness) had to happen to Yuvraj," Tendulkar said in an emotional tone. Yuvraj, in his typical funny manner, recollected how he met Tendulkar for the first time. "My first conversation was when I was looking at him in awe at the dressing room when suddenly he said 'please pass on the biscuits," Yuvraj said. To this Tendulkar said, "I have not got those biscuits till now." On a serious note, Dhoni said that he knew about Yuvraj's situation even before he told him about it. "When his test reports came, someone told me he has cancer. I just said 'are you sure'. The person repeated that Yuvraj has cancer. I was shocked," said Dhoni. Recalling India's World Cup triumph in 2011, Yuvraj said, "Dhoni does not talk too much while batting. But when he got out against Australia in the quarterfinals, while going back he said shaabash Yuvi jitake aana. Source: Hindustan Times

Arjun tendulkar in mumbais U14 probables
Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun is among the list of 32 probables to be selected for the Under-14 team by the Mumbai Cricket Association. Arjun, son of legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, had slammed the first century of his career in the MCA's Under-14 selection trials held at the Cross Maidan in Mumbai on May 26. He played for Khar centre and he was only century maker in the tournament. He scored that century against Goregaon centre in the semi-finals by smashing 14 boundaries and a six in his innings of 124.
Arjun is an all-round talent and has proved himself as a hard hitting batsman and medium fast bowler. The significant difference between Sachin and his son is that Arjun bats and bowls with left hand. These 32 players have been asked to report in off season camp at MCA’s practice facility at Bandra-Kurla complex on 3rd July at 2 pm. Arjun looks a certainty in Mumbai U-14 team with his maturity and performance at the age of 12. Mumbai’s U-14 team will be selected out of these 32 players which will participate in West Zone U/14 championships. The West Zone U-14 tournament is a yearly event being played among teams from Mumbai, Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Gujrat and Baroda. Sachin Tendulkar announces retirement from ODI cricket
Mumbai: One of the game's all-time greats, Sachin Tendulkar, on Sunday announced his retirement from one-day cricket, bringing to an end a glorious 23-year-old career in the format during which he rewrote numerous batting career. "I have decided to retire from the One-Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup
wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest," the 39-year-old said in a statement released by the BCCI on Sunday. "I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years," he added. Tendulkar, considered the most complete batsman in modern cricket and one who was considered next only to the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, retires from the ODI format at the top of the run-getters' list. Tendulkar goes out after amassing 18,426 runs in 463 one-dayers at an average of 44.83. The diminutive right-hander has an astonishing 49 hundreds in the format, including a double hundred -- the first in this form of the game. Tendulkar
made his ODI debut against Pakistan way back in 1989 and interestingly he is quitting the scene just ahead of another series against the arch-rivals. The Mumbaikar, who made himself unavailable for Twenty20 after playing just one game in 2006, will now remain active in only the Test arena. The brightest moment of his ODI career came last year when he finally became part of a World Cup winning Indian team after five previous appearances. Sachin Tendulkar's ODI career: Matches played: 463, Runs scored: 18,426, Batting average: 44.83, 50s: 96, 100s:49, Top score: 200 (not out). Source: News-Bullet, Image: photobucket.com

Sachin Tendulkar presents Saina Nehwal with a brand-new BMW car
Saina Nehwal received a BMW car for winning a bronze medal at the London Olympics from none other than batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who said that the world is yet to see the best of the star shuttler. The felicitation function was organised by Vice President of Andhra Badminton Association Chamundeshwari Nath, who honoured the city girl by buying her the luxurious car. "I am sure that she (Saina) is happy but not satisfied. We are also not satisfied because we know that you can go to greater heights. You have that ability with Gopi's guidance. There are better days ahead and as a sportsperson, you always try to believe that your best is yet to come," the iconic Indian batsman said at the felicitation function. While announcing aBMW car for Saina and a car each for her coach P Gopichand and budding talent P V Sindhu, Sachin said, "I am quite confident that your best is yet to come and you will emerge victorious across the world and that is what we want". Heaping praises on Saina, Tendulkar said,"Whatever I have seen of her there is no drama involved, it's just quality badminton and that is what you expect from a sportsperson. After winning (bronze medal) also, she has not got carried away and that's the beauty of being a champion sport person". Saina gave India its first-ever medal in badminton at Olympics when her Chinese opponent withdrew from the bronze medal play-off after injuring her knee. "This medal means a lot for India, I am sure this medal has not come without dedication, hard work, focus and having a vision," Tendulkar said. Congratulating all the medal winners, he said it was "terrific" for India at London. "You all deserve praise and good things that are coming your way," he added. Responding to the accolade, Saina said she had waited for her Olympic moment since her childhood days. "I dreamt of being a Olympic champion at the age of 9... It is unbelievable to have won the medal. I am so happy. I should thank Gopi sir for making it possible. He really worked hard with me for many years. "Myself winning the first medal will really change a lot of things for badminton in India and I am sure we shall have lot more medals in future. I hope badminton becomes one of the most popular games, though may not be like cricket, in our country," Saina said. Source: Indian Express

Living up to my expectations gives me sleepless nights: Tendulkar
Image Link Flickr
Maintaining his ‘standard’ and living up to his ‘own expectations’ still give Sachin Tendulkar “sleepless nights”, and it is this restlessness that has brought the best out of him.“I don’t think I woke up one morning and felt that there was this responsibility on me and that I needed to live up to that expectation. Something which still gives me sleepless nights is, ‘How will I go out and keep that standard, and live up to my own expectations,” Tendulkar said in an interview published in ‘Time’ magazine. “How am I going to go out and perform? That restlessness brings the best out of me, it’s a healthy sign,” he said. Tendulkar said he refrains from planning too far ahead. “My planning is only done match by match. I don’t plan too far ahead, I’ve never done that. At most, I plan for the next tournament or series. I believe in approaching my targets step by step, and don’t look at the larger picture. The American publication interviewed the Indian batting star for a profile that will appear in its issue this week. Tendulkar was named in TIME’s 2010 list of 100 most influential people in the world. Tendulkar said at the start of his career, he used to “toss and turn” at night before a game. “Now I know that’s normal, so I’ll just get up and watch TV or something. I know it’s just my subconscious mind getting ready for a game. It’s about knowing yourself, and I know myself better now.” Considered one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Tendulkar has smashed several records in his cricketing career and is the only cricketer to score 100 international centuries. He was nominated last month to the Indian Parliament’s Lower house, the Rajya Sabha. Amid all the adulation he has received and the impact he has had on his countrymen, Tendulkar said he believes in focussing on his cricket, and the rest will happen on its own. “Let people talk about it; me, I move forward. Right from my school days, I have done that. I know that certain things I do or say have an impact on people. People appreciate certain things that I do. “But any active sportsman has to be very focused; you’ve got to be in the right frame of mind,” he said, adding that if a person’s energy is diverted in various directions, he does not achieve results. “I need to know when to switch on and switch off, and the rest of the things happen around that. Cricket is in the foreground, the rest is in the background”, he said. Tendulkar said it is important for him to enjoy his game and he reminds himself of that theory in tough moments. “So much happens (on and off the field) that sometimes you forget to enjoy the game. That’s when things don’t go smoothly. There have been challenges along the way, some tough moments. But I would speak to myself and say ‘It doesn’t matter what the situation is, enjoy it’” On how he handles the media hype around him and his game, Tendulkar said when he is on the field, he has “0.5 seconds” or less “to react to a ball” and he “cannot be thinking of what XYZ has said about me. If I get to hear casually about something someone’s said about me, or see something in the papers, that’s fine. I don’t go looking for things. In the last few years, the hype has grown because there is such fierce competition in the media.” “Earlier, you played 10 shots, and maybe a couple of comments were made; today you play one shot and there are 500 comments. The ball is in the player’s court, whether you want to follow every little thing or you want to keep your mind blank and trust your judgement, trust your instincts and take decisions,” he said. On the field, Tendulkar surrenders himself to his natural instincts and his subconscious mind knows what to do. “It is trained to react. At home, my family doesn’t discuss media coverage. It helps because I am able to take my own decisions not influenced by somebody saying something,” he said. When asked about his “switch-on/switch-off” process for a game, he said the “switching on” happens automatically for him. “I know that I am going to be playing in three weeks, so I better start doing something. I get restless. Even if I am holidaying and not doing anything—training, jogging or going for walks—I feel uneasy. It’s become part of me now. Whether I am playing or not, I need some activity and that helps me to be normal, otherwise I am a little restless. “Switching off on the other hand is not an instant process for him and is only possible when he has time between games. When I’m spending time with my children that’s when I actually switch off and I stay away completely from cricket. I do normal things, like any father, any family man.” He further said he has always wanted to be completely focussed on his game and did not want to think about the “commercial” side of it. “I do [advertising] shoots, but not at the cost of compromising on my cricket. At no stage did I feel I would have to make compromises and earn an extra buck,” he added. Source: The Hans India,

Tendulkar: Rajya Sabha seat an honour but not joining politics
Hindustan Times, Yogesh Joshi: Breaking his silence for the first time after the controversy over his nomination to the Rajya Sabha, Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday said that he is not a politician but a sportsperson and will continue to be one. The 39-year-old cricketer said he was honoured to be nominated to the Upper House of Parliament but would continue playing cricket. "I have been nominated after playing cricket for twenty-two-and-a-half years. It is an honour for me. But I want to make it clear that I am not a politician; I am a sportsperson and will continue to be one," said Tendulkar at a ceremony held in Pune to felicitate him for scoring hundred international centuries. Ruling out any possibility of entering fulltime politics while playing cricket, Tendulkar said: "At the time of nominating my name, I was told that there would be many responsibilities, but the appreciation and awards that I have received are because of cricket. I won't stop playing cricket and enter politics. Cricket is my life." Tendulkar also responded to his critics, who have raised doubts over whether he would make a meaningful contribution as a Rajya Sabha member. "It is a big honour for my expertise in two fields and so, after cricket, I would make whatever contribution I can for sportsmen. I would certainly want to contribute and I need your support to do it," said Tendulkar. Political parties have opposed the UPA government's move to nominate Tendulkar, with Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray calling it the Congress's "dirty picture". The BJP has cautioned the Congress over gaining political mileage from the nomination. Tendulkar, however, insisted that the honour bestowed upon him has been previously given to others like Lata Mangeshkar and Prithviraj Kapoor for their contribution to respective fields. "Whenever the honourable President nominates your name, it's an honour. The nomination is for a person's contribution to a field and it is a reflection of that," said Tendulkar. Tendulkar, Rekha recommended for Rajya Sabha membership
News Bullet, STAR News Bureau, New Delhi: Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and actress of yesteryear Rekha are among four eminent persons who have been recommended for nomination as members of Rajya Sabha. Earlier, Congress has proposed to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar that he be party's nominee to Rajya Sabha. The proposal was made to Sachin on Thursday. Earlier in the day, Sachin and his wife Anjali met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi. Officially the meeting was to invite Sonia for the upcoming matches of Mumbai Indians. On the proposal, there is no official comment from Sachin as it is understood that he will take some time before arriving at any decision. Sachin's wife Anjali Tendulkar arrives at 10 Janpath to meet Sonia Gandhi.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent a communication to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday which has been sent to President Pratibha Patil for notification, sources said. Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service. Sonia wanted to meet the batting great and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic feat of scoring 100 international centuries recently. Senior BCCI functionary and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla was also present at Sonia Gandhi's residence. According to sources, Tendulkar and his wife spent close to half an hour with Sonia. Tendulkar, who turned 39 on Tuesday, had to wait for more than one year to move from 99 hundreds to the landmark 100th century before finally achieving it in an Asia Cup match against Bangladesh on March 16. BJP has welcomed the move of the government. There are reports that the government may ask President to nominate Sachin as Rajya Sabha member as five seats are vacant in the house. Rekha Former cricketers Saba Karim and Vinod Kambli welcomed the proposal and told STAR News that Sachin's nomination to Rajya Sabha will help cricket and sports at large. Saba Karim felt that the kind of stature Sachin has held for over twenty years, he can use the same for the welfare of the masses. Tendulkar's nomination to Rajya Sabha has come as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. Many experts and observers feel that Sachin is actively involved in playing cricket and may not accept the offer. They point out that he has been a most apolitical person and not even been associated with a political cause. Although, he is going to be nominated but the fact will remain that the Congress has recommended his name. Sachin should get into Rajya Sabha after his retirement: Ashoke Pandit Director Ashoke Pandit tweeted about the proposed Rajya Sabha nomination of Sachin Tendulkar. He said, "Sachin shd be and surely he is intelligent enough not to get used by political parties.Cong.offers him RS seat & BJP Bharat Ratna." His other tweets on Sachin are as follows: "Sachin will fail if he bats for Congress in Rajya Sabha. His image of an apolitical sportsman will be tarnished.", "Sachin Tendulkars entry into Rajya Sabha is the end of his Cricket carrier.", "Sachin tendulkar shd get into Rajya Sabha after his retirement from cricket.", "Does Sachin Tendulkar want to associate with those who have looted the country with so many scams.", "By getting Sachin Tendulkar in Rajya Sabha it will not help Congress in any way." - with PTI inputs, Source: News Bullet,

A record made for centuries, Sachin scores his hundredth ton
Hindustan Times, Agencies, Mirpur, Sachin Tendulkar on Friday became the first batsman in history to score 100 international centuries, adding another milestone in his record-breaking career. Tendulkar, who turns 39 next month, achieved the feat when he recorded his 49th one-day century in the Asia Cup match against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka. He has 51 Test hundreds. The Mumbai batsman, who has compiled more Test and one-day runs than anyone in history, reached the record with a single, marking the moment with a modest glance to the sky while pointing to the Indian flag on his helmet. Tendulkar is the most capped player in the history of the game with 188 Test and 462 one-day appearances since making his debut against Pakistan in Karachi in November, 1989. Millions of fans in India and across the cricketing world endured an anxious year-long wait before Tendulkar finally reached the landmark in the four-nation tournament, the symbol of one-day supremacy in the continent. After 33 innings and over a year, Tendulkar finally got to the elusive ton. It took him 138 deliveries, one of the most arduos one-day efforts by the 38- year-old right-hander, to get to the 100 that had become as much a talking point as the
team's fortunes in the past 365 days. The bowler against whom it came about was Shakib Al Hasan and the moment was the fourthdelievry of the 43rd over of Indian innings. Tendulkar clipped it down to square leg and jogged the single, gave a long hard stare to his bat after taking off his helmet before looking heavenward in his signature style. What was missing was emotion. The diminutive batsman, the most successful batsman in internationla cricket right now, kept it subdued. He shook hands with Suresh Raina, his partner at the other end, and raised his bat to acknowledge the cheering fans with a straight face giving little insight into what was going on his mind amid the drama. But the teammates in the dressing room were as expressive as they could be as they all got up from their seats to applaud the veteran as he added another feather to an already overcrowded cap. However, reaching the milestone was no easy task for the player who often makes batting look effortless. After getting what several former cricketers called a monkey off his back, Tendulkar was dismissed by Mashrafe Mortaza off the second last delivery of the 47th over. The 114-run knock was incidentally Tendulkar's maiden century against Bangladesh. Upon his dismissal, the Bangladeshi players expectedly gave him a round of applause as he walked back to pavillion with fans cheering him on. His Indian teammates and coach Duncan Fletcher received him at the boundary lauding the iconic player. Source: Hindustan Times, Image: Photobucket

There’s no one to replace sachin, says Vengsarkar
do so when the time is right for him to do so,” said Vengsarkar. Kapil Dev had said on Wednesday that Sachin should have quit after the World Cup victory. “In my opinion, he should have quit ODI on a high after India won the World Cup....But it's for him to decide,” Kapil had said. Vengsarkar, said that even at the age of 39, Tendulkar was as fit as anyone in the Indian team. He also said that Indian team's bench strength was poor, and there is none to fill in the boots when great players like Tendulkar leave the scene. “I really wonder whether India has a player of Sachin's class in its midst at the moment. Our bench strength is not at all that solid whereby we can hope to fill the void left by some great players in time to come,” he said. “Sachin may be nearing 39 years, but I strongly feel that he is as fit and as charged up, if not more, than any of the players playing for India at present.” Source: Hindustan Times, Source: Image

Tendulkar returns for Australia tri-series
The New Indian Express: CHENNAI: India today turned to its only in-form batsman Sachin Tendulkar to bolster its fragile batting line-up with the selectors naming the veteran in the 17-member squad for the next month's tri-series in Australia. Paceman Praveen Kumar, who missed the Test series in Australia because of an injury, and speedster Irfan Pathan were named in the squad, announced by BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale after a marathon meeting of the selection committee here. Lanky Punjab spinner Rahul Sharma was also included but there were no major surprises in the ODI squad despite the team's dismal performance in the ongoing Test series, which India is trailing 0-3. Tendulkar, who played his last ODI in World Cup final on April 2, is the only batsman who seems to be in good nick and will get an opportunity to record a historic 100th international century. Indian cricket team to watch ‘Don 2′ in Melbourne

The Asian Age: Flamboyant Indian batsman Virender Sehwag on Thursday created history by becoming the highest scorer ever in a one-day innings and the second cricketer after team-mate Sachin Tendulkar to score a double century in the fourth ODI against the West Indies here. Sehwag smashed his way into record books with his stupendous 219, surpassing Tendulkar's 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior on February 24
last year. This remarkable achievement gives Sehwag the unique distinction of being India's top scorer in both Tests and ODIs. He had scored 319 against South Africa in Chennai in 2008. The dashing opener reached the double century milestone when he square-cut Andre Russell for a boundary in the 44th over of the Indian innings, setting off wild celebrations in the stands and dressing room at the jam-packed Holkar Stadium. He faced 140 balls and hit 23 fours and six sixes in his marathon innings. Tendulkar
