'Facebook friends judge you by your photos, not texts'
Indian Express, Agencies : London, Are you on Facebook? Then, make sure
really necessary, they said. In one experiment, the researches found college students who viewed a Facebook photo of a fellow student having fun with friends rated that person as extroverted -- even if his profile said he was 'not a big people-person'. The only exception is when a photo is out of the ordinary or shows someone in a negative light. In that case, people do use profile text to help interpret what kind of person is shown in the profile, they said. "Photos seem to be the primary way we make impressions of people on social networking sites," lead author Brandon Van Der Heide was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. "People will accept a positive photo of you as showing how you really are. But if the photo is odd or negative in any way, people want to find out more before forming an impression," he said. For their study, published in Journal of Communication, the researchers recruited 195 college students and made them view mock Facebook profiles of a person that included a photo and a written 'about me' statement. ... contd. Dolly the sheep - symbol of 21st century science
By: Olga Sobolevskaya, 15 years ago the world learned about the
appearance of the first cloned mammal – Dolly the sheep. At that moment the cloned lamb created by Scottish bioengineers was seven months old. However, scientists were not in a hurry to announce the sensation because there had been too many failures before. Today cloning remains a difficult task and is still unsafe, experts say.Mammals that are born in the usual way, as a result of natural reproduction, combine the mother’s and father’s genes. Dolly, whose life evolved from a mature body cell, rather than a sex cell, only inherited the genetic information of the prototype sheep. In the last 15 years a whole army of cloned animals has been bred – from cats to mules – and large bioengineering centres function in many countries of the world. One of such well-known Russian centres is located in Pushchino, a science-town near Moscow Source: Voice of Russia.

Radio One thinks differently ! plans to reach English speaking Indians
New Delhi: 94.3 Radio One unveils a brand new phase in the crucial markets of Mumbai and Delhi. The station had conducted a yearlong survey wherein it emerged that most listeners are bored of the unintelligent content aired on radio and no longer connect to the medium. Radio One aims to bridge the gap by delivering impactful matter wrapped in friendly breezy music. In its new avatar, Radio One will be Intelligent, Involving and International Vineet Singh Hukmani, Managing Director, said said , "Every radio station sounds the same. Everyone's catering to the lowest common denominator, and it's about time we got formatted and got out of generic mode" . He added, " We're looking at catering to a universe of 4.5 million English speaking Indians who read an English newspaper like the TOI, a news channel like times now, are regularly on facebook and twitter . These are people who look for intelligent content. We will engage and involve them with rich content in the area of national and local happenings, sport, Hollywood, business, held together by great music" On whether the market is ready for English, he said , "There is a huge misconception about English per say in radio circles. Famous speeches like 'freedom at midnight' or 'tryst with destiny' by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru were made in English on radio and a very long time ago. Every parent wants his child to excel in English and it is this quality that has made us so competitive in global markets. Indians today 'thrive' globally because of their comfort with English as against the Chinese or many other 'non English adopting' countries. So if English or an international feel can do well in infotainment in Print, TV, Internet , Cinema, Outdoor ..then why not in radio? The medium is lagging behind on this front and we aim to correct it. English / International beckons with open arms! The listener and advertiser have already embraced it in other media and they will do so in radio too. Source: Media News Line

Passions high over Palestine
Alexander Vatutin, 5.11.2011, 15:59, UNESCO's decision to grant its fully-fledged membership to Palestine has proved a litmus paper test showing the international community’s stand on the Arab nation in question. While
.![]() |
most UNESCO members voted in favour of the Palestinians’ membership bid, the United States, Israel, Canada and several other countries have now declared a boycott against UNESCO.For there is no other way to describe the decision to withdraw funding from UNESCO by those opposed to Palestine’s integration into the UN. Given that the next organization that Palestine is going to seek membership of is the World Health Organization, the United States may again be tempted to economize by withdrawing its funding from the WHO. Historically, the United States has borne the brunt of UN funding, which is basically correct, since the US is world’s richest nation and it’s only fair that it pays the most. But it’s hardly acceptable that they are using their position to blackmail the international community. It would have been a far more reasonable thing to do if instead, they tried to understand the reasons behind the Palestinians’ attempt to integrate into the United Nations, and why most countries are prepared to vote for Palestine’s admission both to UNESCO and the Untied Nations. This is what Professor Irina Zviagelskaya of the Institute for Oriental Studies has to say on this.
